Roland Hammer (born December 24, 1952 in Geithain ) is a former German soccer player who played in the GDR Oberliga for 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and BSG Chemie Böhlen .

Athletic career

The BSG Motor in the small town of Geithain in West Saxony was at the beginning of Roland Hammer's football career. He started there as a ten-year-old, at the age of 14 he moved to 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, where he went through the usual youth teams. With the junior team he was GDR junior champion in 1971, where he played a decisive role as the top scorer in the junior league with 19 goals. His good performance also opened the gate for him to the GDR junior national team, for which he only played two international matches in September 1970, as he then had to take a break due to injury. In the football season 1971/72 Hammer was part of the squad of the 2nd team of 1. FC Lok, with whom he was Leipzig district champion. After completing his school education, he acquired a skilled worker certificate as a diesel locomotive fitter in 1971.

In the meantime, the 1.78 m tall Roland Hammer had made a name for himself as a solid defender, and in the 1972/73 season he was in the Leipzig league for the first time. With his four league point games, he was not yet part of the team, and he was also not on the pitch when 1. FC Lok played the final of the GDR soccer cup in 1973 (2: 3 against 1. FC Magdeburg). In the following season, Hammer was able to underpin his eligibility for a regular place with 16 league appearances as well as five European Cup games and one GDR Cup game. Hammer made his breakthrough in the 1974/75 season, when he was used in all league point games. He had also become interesting again for selection games in the GDR, with eleven international matches in the GDR youth national team. The year 1976 brought Hammer his greatest success. On May 1, 1976, 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig was again in the GDR Cup final, this time with the Libero Hammer in the squad. Thanks to his reliable defensive work, the Leipzigers were able to keep their goal clean and scored three goals against FC Vorwärts Frankfurt.

Between 1976 and 1977 Hammer played five international matches with the B national team. After that, Hammer's performance stagnated, for the first time in three years he did not play all league point games in the 1977/78 season and was also eliminated from the national squad. The latter meant that he was drafted into military service in the fall of 1978. However, he was given the opportunity to continue playing football with the Vorwärts Kamenz army sports community . With her he rose in 1979 to the second-rate GDR league .

After his discharge from the army in the spring of 1980, Hammer was 27 years old and saw no future at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. He therefore moved to the Oberligaaufsteiger Chemie Böhlen for which he played three years, including a season in the GDR league, after which the Böhlener were relegated in 1981. In 1983 Hammer could not save the chemists from relegation again, and this was the reason for him to withdraw from high-performance sport. After twelve years, he was able to look back on 161 league games, 122 of which he had played at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig.

Further career

After leaving Böhlen, Hammer settled in the Niederlausitz district town of Guben and joined the local BSG Chemie . As a player-coach, he and his team made it to the GDR league in 1986, which the team only belonged to for one season.
