Athletic career

The football season 1949/50 was the previous sporting highlight for the Harz city of Thale since the end of the Second World War . The Eisenhüttenwerk sports community first became the soccer champion of Saxony-Anhalt , then qualified through a promotion round for the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football, and won the GDR football cup at the end of the season. In the final , the sports community defeated BSG KWU Erfurt 4-0. Helmuth Feuerberg, who was previously involved in the other successes, was used in the cup final as a left midfielder.

His first league season in 1950/51 began Feuerberg from the first league game. He scored his first league goal in the 14th match between Union Oberschöneweide and SG Eisenhüttenwerk (2: 4). After that he was only used sporadically and completed only 18 of the 34 league games. During the season, the SG EHW was restructured into the company sports community (BSG) Stahl Thale. In 1951/52 Feuerberg played both in midfield and attack, scored seven league goals and missed only one point game. In the 1952/53 season, BSG Stahl reached fifth place, their best placement during their senior league membership. Feuerberg played all 32 point games and was successful again with seven goals. In June 1953, Feuerberg was used in the B international match Bulgaria - GDR (2-1) in the left midfield. In 1954, the team suffered a deep fall with relegation. Although Feuerberg played 26 of the 28 league games, he only got one goal.

In the subsequent second division in the GDR league season 1954/55 Feuerberg came in the 26 league games 25 times without scoring goals. As a result of a league reform, the number of teams in the GDR league was significantly reduced, so that Thale's seventh place in his season did not reach relegation. The BSG Stahl and Feuerberg then played in the second GDR league , Feuerberg did not return to higher-class football.
