Gerhard Apel (born February 16, 1923 ) is a former German soccer player. From 1950 to 1954 he played 58 games for EHW / Stahl Thale in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football, and scored eight goals. In 1950 he won the GDR Cup with the SG EHW Thale.

Athletic career

At the age of 25, Apel came in 1948 from the lower-class sports community in Weddersleben to the second-class regional division club SG Eisenhüttenwerk Thale. With him he rose in 1949 to the now second-class state class of Saxony-Anhalt . A year later Apel became soccer champion of Saxony-Anhalt with the SG EHW. In a promotion round, Thale then qualified for the 1950/51 league season. In the GDR Cup competition in 1949/50 , the ironworkers reached the final, which they won with Apel as half-right striker 4-0 against BSG KWU Erfurt .

The SG EHW Thale nominated Apel for their league squad for the 1950/51 season. However, he could only complete seven point games at the beginning of the season, after which he was out for the rest of the season. It was not until the 1952/53 season, the SG EHW had meanwhile been converted into the company sports community (BSG) Stahl Thale, that Apel returned to the league team. In his regular position half right he played 28 of the 32 point games and became the top scorer of BSG Stahl with seven goals together with Helmuth Feuerberg . In 1953/54 he came after a few failures in the 28 league games 23 times and had to be content with only one goal.

At the end of the season 1953/54 Thale had to relegate from the league and Apel was no longer in the squad of BSG Stahl in the following season. He went back to Weddersleben as a recreational footballer.
