Herbert Thomas (born January 11, 1915 ; † after 1952) was a German football player who played first division football for SG Gera-Süd and BSG Motor Gera between 1949 and 1952 .

Athletic career

August 28, 1949 was the climax of the 1948/49 soccer season for SG Gera-Süd. After winning the Thuringian Football Cup, she qualified for the first competition for the East German FDGB Football Cup. Although they only finished fifth in the Thuringian championship under their previous name SG Gera-Pforten, Gera made it into the final in the FDGB Cup. On the day mentioned, they met Waggonbau Dessau , but lost 0: 1. Also on the Gera side was the 34-year-old Herbert Thomas, who was set up as the right winger.

With participation in the cup final, Gera-Süd received the right to start the newly created zone league (later DS-Oberliga, GDR-Oberliga ), which went into its first season in September 1949 to determine the East German football champions. Thomas was part of the SG Gera-Süd squad and was used in the first league game. Until October he looked like he could establish himself as a regular player, but then tore off his streak of five point game stakes. It was not until January 1950 that he played another league game. It took two years before Thomas returned to Gera in the first division, now DS-Oberliga. When the team, now taking on as BSG Motor Gera, was still in acute danger of relegation after the fourth-last league game of the 1951/52 season, coach Büchner reactivated next to almost 36-year-old Kurt Golde also 37-year-old Herbert Thomas, who had been in the last three league games helped to secure the relegation for Gera. After that, Thomas finally resigned from active football.
