When Max Wollenschläger was in the final of the East German Football Cup on August 28, 1949, at the age of 33 he was the oldest player in his team, SG Gera-Süd . The Geraer lost the final 0: 1 against Waggonbau Dessau with Wollenschläger as the right wing runner , but had qualified as a cup finalist for the newly introduced East German football zone league (from 1950 DS-Oberliga, from 1953 GDR-Oberliga ).

When the Zone League started its first season in 1949/50 to determine the East German soccer champions, Wollenschläger was also part of the SG Gera-Süd squad. However, he was not used for the first time until matchday 11, but then played all of the remaining point games except for one game. In 1950/51 the Gera team joined the company sports club (BSG) Mechanics, Wollenschläger continued to be part of the top division. This time he was called up from the first day of play, but had to sit out for four weeks after the second game. He then played his way into the regular team and played a total of 28 of the 34 league matches by the end of the season.

At the age of 35, Wollenschläger started his third first division season in the summer of 1951, in which he was initially called up from the start. His team was now called BSG Motor. By October he was used in nine league games as a midfielder. The game Unity Pankow - Motor Gera (1: 4) on October 28th was his last first division game.
