Rudolf Kersten (born September 4, 1926 ) is a former football player who was active for the BSG Waggonbau / Motor Dessau in the top football class of GDR football . With BSG Waggonbau, he won the East German soccer cup in 1949.

Athletic career

Kersten was part of the team of SG Dessau-Nord in the 1948/49 football season , which took part in the football championship in Saxony-Anhalt and reached second place in the south season at the end of the championship. In the state cup, the Dessau team reached the final, but lost 3-1 to ECW Eilenburg. As a cup finalist, Dessau, now competing as BSG Waggonbau, qualified for the first competition for the East German FDGB Cup . The wagon builders reached the final, in which they defeated Gera-Süd 1-0. The 23-year-old Rudolf Kersten was called up as a center forward in the final.

As a cup winner, BSG Waggonbau was qualified for the first season of the newly introduced zone league (later DS-Oberliga, GDR-Oberliga ). Kersten was there from the first league game and played all 26 league games. Since he only got going as a scorer from the 8th matchday on, he stood with his eight goals this season in the shadow of his storm colleagues Kusmierek (15) and Welzel (13). Until the descent of Dessau (from 1950 BSG Motor) after the 1953/54 season, Kersten was a regular player, of the 156 point games played from 1949 to 1954 he missed only seven matches. With his 48 championship goals he was a reliable attacker for a long time, only in the last league season he came only three hits.

Kersten remained loyal to Motor Dessau even after relegation. It was only when he was 32 that he retired from competitive football. In 1957 he had to relegate again with Dessau and in 1958 played his last football season in the third-class II. GDR league . In the three seasons of the first GDR league Kersten was called up 55 times and scored 16 goals.
