Helmut Sturm (born September 12, 1920 ) is a former German football player who was active for Gera in top division football between 1949 and 1952 .

Athletic career

On August 28, 1949, the SG Gera-Süd was in the final of the first East German FDGB soccer cup . In the game that was lost 1-0 to Waggonbau Dessau , 27-year-old Helmut Sturm was in the position of right defender. He was then also in the Gera squad for the first season of the newly introduced zone league (later DS-Oberliga, GDR-Oberliga ), which should lead to the determination of the East German soccer champions in 1949/50. Gera had qualified as a cup finalist for the zone league.

Sturm was used from the first day of the league and had completed 21 of the 26 league games by the end of the season. For the 1950/51 season, the zone league became the upper league of the German Sports Committee , DS-Oberliga for short. Sturm was again part of the Geraer squad, who now ran up as the company sports association (BSG) Mechanik. He was again a regular player, only missing three point games in the first half of the season. In the second half of the season he had a few longer failures, so he could only complete 23 of the 34 championship games.

At the beginning of the league season in 1951/52, Sturm was 31 years old and lost his regular place to Gerhard Friemel, who was nine years his junior. Sturm played only game days five, 23 and 24. His last league game was the game Motor Oberschöneweide - Motor Gera (2: 1) on February 3, 1952, in which he was used as a right defender as usual. With that, Sturm had reached 47 point games in the top division of GDR football within three seasons . As a defender, he did not score goals in these missions.
