career

The company sports association (BSG) Waggonbau Dessau (later BSG Motor Dessau), founded in 1949, had its most successful years in 1949 and 1950. As a state cup finalist, the BSG qualified in 1949 for the first competition for the East German FDGB soccer cup. With a 1-0 final victory over Gera-Süd , Dessau became the first FDGB cup winners. In the Dessau final squad was 23-year-old Heinz Matthies as the left wing runner .

By winning the cup, Waggonbau Dessau was also qualified for the first season of the East German Zone League (later DS-Oberliga, DDR-Oberliga ) and thus played for the championship in East German football in 1949/50 . Dessau, meanwhile renamed BSG Motor, landed in third place, Matthies again belonged to the team. As a midfielder he was part of the team's tribe, he played all 26 point games and was once successful as a goalscorer. In 1950/51 the league teams had to play 34 point games, Matthies was the only one of his team who was called up in all matches. He played again in midfield and once again scored a goal. In the season 1951/52 Matthies played only 15 point games in the first half of the season and then fell out for the rest of the season. In 1952/53 he was there again and was missing only once in the 32 top division rounds. It was also his highest scoring season, scoring three championship goals. He was used almost constantly as a left midfielder. In September 1953, Matthies started his fifth league season at the age of 30. But he only played four point games until October, his last league game he completed on October 11 in the encounter between Motor Dessau and activist Brieske-Ost (2: 3), in which he acted as a left runner as usual.

Since Motor Dessau had to relegate from the league after the 1953/54 season, Heinz Matthies no longer appeared in first division football. In his five league seasons he had played 110 point games and had been successful as a goalscorer five times.
