Joachim Otto

Joachim Otto (born September 5, 1927 ) was a soccer goalkeeper in Germany. With the ZSG Horch Zwickau he became the first GDR soccer champion in 1950.

Athletic career

Otto's football career began in the Pomeranian Stettin before the end of World War II . After the end of the war, he settled in Zwickau in western Saxony and joined the Zwickau-Mitte sports club. For the 1949/50 season, in which the first division of the East German Sports Committee as the highest football class in the Soviet occupation zone (later GDR ) played their point games, Otto was part of the ZSG Horch Zwickau squad. During the season, however, he was in the shadow of the regular goalkeeper Max Hofsommer , who was in goal 16 times in the 26 point games played, while Otto only got ten times. At the end of the season he could still call himself a master player, as the Zwickau team had won the first GDR soccer championship. In the 1950/51 season Otto moved up to the goalkeeper because Hofsommer had ended his career. He was also placed in two games of the Saxony soccer team. On the 17th matchday of the 1950/51 season, on December 10, 1950, Otto was involved in the scandal game at Chemie Leipzig. The Zwickau players competed under their new name BSG Motor and were deprived of their 2-1 lead in the last minute when, in the opinion of the Zwickau players, Otto was illegally pushed into the goal and the referee decided to 2-2. Of the violently protesting Zwickau players, eight were expelled from the field, which led to tumult among the spectators. Otto was not affected by the expositions because he was injured on the floor.

After the end of the 1950/51 season, in which Otto had played 31 of the 34 point games, he left Zwickau and joined FK Pirmasens . There he played for several years in the Oberliga Südwest , at that time one of the top five leagues in the DFB game operations . After a short interlude at ASV Landau , Otto played between 1956 and 1961 at Heider SV in the Oberliga Nord .
