history

1946–1949: The way to the top division

After the Second World War, all clubs were dissolved and the Babelsberg Sports Group , or SG Babelsberg for short , was founded in Babelsberg to reorganize the sport. This sports group was founded by members of various clubs. One of these associations was SpVgg Potsdam 03 , which is considered the predecessor of SG Karl Marx Babelsberg , which was founded in 1948 . In addition, members of VfL Eintracht 06 Babelsberg , which was founded in 1906 as Concordia 1906 Babelsberg , were involved in founding the sports group.

In the 1947/48 season, SG Babelsberg took first place in the Brandenburg state class in Group B and qualified for the finals for the championship in Brandenburg . In the stadium at the water tower , the Babelsberg team lost 0-1 against SG Cottbus-Ost . As runner-up, SG Babelsberg qualified for the Eastern Zone Championship in 1948 , where they were eliminated from the qualification against SG Meerane .

In the 1948/49 season they were sorted into the West relay in the national class and took first place in the relay. As a result, they qualified again for the final for the championship in Brandenburg and met BSG Franz Mehring Marga . The Babelsberg team won the first leg, while the team from Marga won the second leg. Because an addition of the results was not provided, no winner could be determined by means of these two games, so a decision game was played on a neutral court. In the Eberswalder Stadion SG Babelsberg defeated BSG Franz Mehring Marga 2-1 and secured the Brandenburg championship. With this victory they qualified for the East Zone Championship in 1949 . In the quarter-finals they met again on SG Meerane and were eliminated from the competition due to another defeat. Through the Brandenburg Championship, the team from Babelsberg qualified for the newly founded GDR Oberliga .

1949–1951: First steps in the league

The SG Babelsberg did not become a founding member of the GDR Oberliga because the GDR sport was changed in 1949. As a result, the SG was renamed the company sports association BSG "Märkische Volksstimme" Babelsberg . The company sports community took the right to start in the GDR league. In the debut season , the Babelsbergs achieved seventh place in the middle of the table.

After the season, the company sports association was renamed as central sports associations were founded. The Babelsbergers were subordinated to the sports association Rotation (publishing and printing), and for this reason the club was now called BSG Rotation Babelsberg . The SED newspaper Märkische Volksstimme continued to function as the sponsoring company . In the 1950/51 season they reached a midfield position again under the new name with eighth place. Part of the responsibility for this was striker Johannes Schöne , who scored 38 goals in the season. With this number of goals he became the top scorer in the league, a record that has not been broken.

1951–1958: ups and downs in the big leagues

In the 1951/52 season , the Babelsberg team could again rely on Johannes Schöne , who took third place in the top scorer list with 25 goals behind the two top scorer Rudolf Krause and Kurt Weißenfels . The Babelsbergers finished the season in sixth place. In the following season, the Babelsberger could not build on the performance of the previous season and had to fight for a long time against relegation. In the end they managed to stay in the league with twelfth place. After they were almost relegated, the BSG Rotation Babelsberg managed in the 1953/54 season with fifth place, their best placement in the GDR league.

After the good season, another season followed in which the team from Babelsberg could not build on the performances from the previous season. She had to fight relegation again, but was finally able to keep the class with 12th place. In the insignificant transition round in 1955 , the Babelsbergs again reached fifth place. In the 1956 season , the Babelsberg team was able to confirm this place with seventh place. In 1955 and 1965, the Babelsberg youth celebrated great successes. In 1955 the youth team won the FDGB Cup, and a year later the juniors were GDR national champions .

In the 1957 season , the BSG Rotation Babelsberg had to fight relegation again. With one point ahead of the relegation places, the BSG was able to escape relegation as 11th. A year later, the Babelsberger could not prevent relegation again and were the last to relegate from the GDR Oberliga to the GDR League . The team from Babelsberg did not make it to the GDR league again. In the all-time table of the GDR league, the BSG occupies 19th place.

1959–1961: The struggle for resurgence

The 1959 season went well for the Babelsberg team, and they were involved in the fight for promotion. At the end of the season, the Babelsberger missed promotion to the GDR league behind the relegated SC Chemie Halle and SC Aufbau Magdeburg due to the poorer goal difference . In the following season, the Babelsbergers could not intervene in the fight for promotion and even had to fight against relegation. With the 10th place they secured relegation in the GDR league.

After the season, the first team of the company sports association was delegated to the newly founded SC Potsdam , which also took over the starting position of the BSG Rotation Babelsberg. The cause was the attempt made at the beginning of 1961 to improve the promotion of talent in GDR sport. Therefore, in addition to the already existing sports clubs, new sports clubs were founded in the cities of Neubrandenburg , Frankfurt (Oder) and Potsdam. In the all-time table of the GDR league, the team from Babelsberg occupies 117th place, while SC Potsdam occupies 95th place.

1961–1963: demoted to the II-DDR-Liga

Since the 1958 season, the second team of the BSG Rotation Babelsberg played and, after the first team had to leave the company, the second became the first team. In the 1961/62 season , the team was appointed to Season 2, which consisted of teams from the districts of Berlin, Potsdam, Frankfurt and Cottbus. With the ninth place the Babelsberg secured the league. In the following season - and thus the last season of the II-DDR-Liga - they could not fight for promotion and had to relegate as 10th in the district league Potsdam . While the second team is on the 77th place in the all-time table of the II. DDR League , the first team is placed on the 85th place.

1963–1990: Regional football in Babelsberg

Once in the district league, a constant promotion and relegation between the district league and the district class determined the football of the BSG Rotation Babelsberg. In 1966 the football department of SC Potsdam was dissolved due to lack of success and reintegrated into the BSG Rotation Babelsberg. On May 3, 1969, the joint venture was renamed BSG DEFA Babelsberg , which also resulted in a change in the operating company . In the 1983/84 season, the team could not prevent relegation to the district class. Two years later, the district class team had to move from the large Karl Liebknecht Stadium to the Stern sports field in the residential area of the same name. There the team succeeded in the 1986/87 season again promotion to the district class.
