The GDR district league Potsdam was the top division in the Potsdam district and one of fifteen football district leagues in the field of the DFV .
An administrative reform in 1952 abolished the previous states in the GDR and replaced them with 15 districts (including East Berlin). Accordingly, the existing national classes were dissolved and 15 newly created district leagues were installed, which largely formed the new third division. The next higher league was usually the GDR League , only between 1956 and 1962/63 there was the third division, the II. GDR League .
The district league Potsdam was organized by the district technical committee (BFA) football Potsdam and played in a round-robin tournament. In the first three seasons twelve teams and in the following six seasons 13 to 16 teams played for the district championship. With the season 1961/62 the district league played in two seasons with a maximum of 14 teams each, where the district champion was determined in two finals of the season winners. From 1964/65 the district league was again played in one group for ten seasons and consisted of 16 teams. The seasons 1974/75 to 1983/84 were again two-pronged with 14 teams each, where there were again two final games of the season winners to determine the district champion. From the 1984/85 season to 1989/90, the district league was continued on a single track with a number of 16 participating teams.
Usually the district champion had to qualify for promotion via a promotion round, only when the II. GDR League from 1957 to 1962 and the GDR League from 1971 to 1984 consisted of five squadrons, all district champions rose directly.
With the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 and the political changes in the GDR, the district technical committees (BFA) Cottbus, Frankfurt / Oder and Potsdam founded the Brandenburg Regional Football Association (FLB) in the summer of 1990 . This installed the Brandenburg State League as the top division at state level for the 1990/91 season . The district league started as a subordinate division to the state league and consisted of 14 teams. The district champion rose directly to the regional league for the following season.
After the reunification of Germany , the dissolution of the DFV was decided at an extraordinary association day on November 20, 1990 in Leipzig and the NOFV was founded at its . The integration into the existing structures of the DFB took place in 1991. The Oberliga Nordost, the highest division of the regional association, started in the 1991/92 season as a third-class league in German football. The district league was now only five-tier and entered its final season with 17 teams. The master rose directly to the association league (formerly regional league).
As a result of restructuring in the FLB, the three district technical committees were dissolved in 1992 and 18 new football groups were formed. At the same time, a new uniform division system was introduced, in which the district league was abolished. In their place came the newly created equal two-track national league of the FLB.
The record champions of the Potsdam regional league are BSG Motor Hennigsdorf, which won the regional championship nine times.
