Houilles railway accident

In the railway accident of Houilles on October 9, 1920, a passenger train in the driving station of Houilles in recently derailed freight cars . 47 people died.

the accident

On the train between Paris and Le Havre of the Chemins de fer de l'Ouest , a freight train was Mantes to Paris go. The carriages of the train were not yet equipped with a continuous braking system. A train separation occurred on an incline . The engine driver then stopped the front part of the train in Houilles station. The rear, detached part of the train overcame the incline with the remaining momentum , picked up speed on the following incline and collided with the stationary front part of the train in Houilles station. The rubble also blocked the track, which was used by a suburban train coming from Paris immediately after the accident. This also derailed. Numerous cars and the station signal box were destroyed.

consequences

47 people died. The minister responsible promised to have end-to-end braking systems installed in all French freight wagons.
