The GDR district league Neubrandenburg was for many years, but not continuously, the third highest soccer league in the DFV area . In 1952, an administrative reform in the GDR abolished the previous national leagues and replaced them with 15 districts (including East Berlin). Accordingly, the district league, which was held in 15 seasons, was established, which now formed the new third division. Between 1958 and 1964 there were promotion games between the two split seasons.
First, promotion games had to be carried out in order to be able to move up into the GDR league as the second division.
Between 1955 and 1962/63, the district leagues formed only the fourth division under a second GDR league . Up until 1956 promotion rounds were necessary for the district champions, between 1957 and 1961/62 the champions rose directly.
After the dissolution of the II. GDR leagues, the district leagues were then again the third division until 1990, there were initially again promotion rounds of the district champions for promotion to the GDR league until 1969. In the times of the five-tier GDR league between 1971/72 and 1983/84 , the 15 district champions rose directly.
After the five seasons of the GDR league had been reduced to two from 1984, the promotion rounds for district champions were reintroduced.
