The district league Potsdam 1978/79 was the 27th staging of the district league Potsdam carried out by the district technical committee (BFA) football Potsdam . It was the top division in the Potsdam district and the third highest in the league system in the DFV area .

In the finals of the district championship, as in 1976, the winner of the northern relay of the previous year, relegated from the GDR league Motor Hennigsdorf and the winner of the southern relay of Motor Ludwigsfelde faced each other. After a draw in the first leg, Hennigsdorf secured their ninth district championship title with a 2-0 away win in Ludwigsfelde and returned to the superordinate GDR league by return mail.

Due to the immediate relegation of last year's champions Motor Süd Brandenburg from the GDR league, a fifth relegated from the district league had to be determined as in the previous year. In the playoffs of the two table twelfth, Motor Pritzwalk from the north relay prevailed against Lokomotive Ketzin. Relegated to one of the subordinate district class relays from the north were the second representative of Stahl Hennigsdorf and last year's climber Empor Fürstenberg. From the south, in addition to Ketzin, after one year of membership, this affected Motor Treuenbrietzen and Wissenschaft Großbeeren. In return, all five season winners of the district class rose in the following season, BSG Progress Wittstock (Season A) , BSG Traktor Häsen (Season B) , the second representative of Chemie Premnitz (Season C) , BSG Empor Beelitz (Season D) and last year's relegated TSV Luckenwalde (Season E) in the district league.
