Antonios N. Jannaris

Antonios Nikolaos Jannaris , also Antonios Jannarakis or Antonios Jeannarakis ( Greek Αντώνιος Ν. Γιάνναρης , born August 25, 1852 in Lakki in what is today the regional district of Chania ; † 1909 on a ship to New York ) was a Cretan Graecist, linguist and neo-Greekist.

Life

Jannaris was born in the Cretan village of Lakki. His father, Nikolaos Jannaris, was the brother of Chatzimichalis Jannaris (Χατζημιχάλης Γιάνναρης), a famous leader of the Cretan resistance against the Ottoman occupation of the island. During the uprising of 1866 he went to Athens and attended the Second High School there (Β΄ Β΄υμνάσιο Αθηνών). On November 30, 1872, he enrolled at the University of Athens . In 1873 he went to Germany to study Classical Philology and Medieval Romance Studies . At this time he also tried to be accepted into the Saxon Army in order to be trained as a mechanic at the Mathematical War School . However, he changed his plan and enrolled at the University of Leipzig , where he prepared the publication of his volume of Cretan folk songs (1876) with the support of his uncle. He then studied philology at the University of Athens and continued his studies in Germany after graduating (πτυχίο). There he received his doctorate in Classical Philology in Marburg in 1880 with a dissertation in ancient Greek on the pseudo-Longin treatise On the Sublime , which he dedicated to Carl Julius Caesar . He took part in the Cretan uprising of 1889 and was even appointed chairman of the assembly of resistanceists on the Omalos Plateau (Ομαλός Χανίων). In the Cretan uprising from 1895 to 1898 he was the leader. From 1896 to 1903 he was a professor at St Andrews University . During the time of the Cretan autonomy (1898-1913) he was inspector general of the schools of Crete. In 1904 he was arrested in Chania for his opposition to the High Commissioner , Prince George of Greece .

Apart from his dissertation in Classical Philology, Jannaris mainly published dictionaries (Modern Greek-German, Modern Greek-English), a course (French) and a grammar (in German) as well as a collection of Cretan folk songs and proverbs for language acquisition and mediation . Its historical grammar of Attic Greek from antiquity to the present alone satisfied scientific demands at the time and represents the only attempt to date at a completely diachronic grammar of Greek. This approach was taken up by Chrys C. Caragounis in his exegesis of the New Testament .
