Christos Karvounis

Christos Karvounis (Χρήστος Καρβούνης, * 1969 in Athens ) is a Greek Graecist and Neo- Graecist ( linguist ).

Life

Raised in Athens, Karvounis studied Greek Philology , Byzantine Studies and Modern Greek Philology and Ancient History as well as General Linguistics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . There he obtained his MA in 1994, in 2002 he received his doctorate there with a dissertation on the Attic speaker Demosthenes .

From 1998 to 2001 he taught at the Institute for Byzantine Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich didactics of modern and ancient Greek, and since 2002 he has been a lecturer in Greek linguistics and linguistic history at the Department of Neo-Greek Studies. Since 2007 he has been working in the Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germersheim . In the summer semester of 2008 he represented the chair for Neo-Greek Studies in Munich. In 2014 he achieved his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in the subject of Neo-Greek Studies with a thesis on diglossia, language ideology and value conflicts. On the history of the modern Greek standard language 1780 to 1930 .

Research areas

Karvounis works mainly on Greek linguistics: on the history of language , intralingual translation, diglossia , language question , language (s) politics , language planning and sociolinguistics . In the Graecist field, since his dissertation on Demosthenes, he has published various other works on the Attic orator as well as a study on the phonology of ancient Greek .
