Athletic career

At the age of 17, Herbert Fölsche played for Chemie Lauscha in the second-rate GDR league in the 1954/55 season . Of the 26 league games played 18 games and with his seven goals was one of the top scorers of his team. In 1956 (change to the calendar year game rhythm) Fölsche played with the relegated Lauscha team in the third class II. GDR league . He then moved to the GDR upper division SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt , where he played his first division game on June 30, 1957 in the encounter unit Dresden - SC Motor (4: 3). By the end of the season he was used in another ten point games, in which he commuted between defense and midfield. The Karl-Marx-Städter relegated at the end of the season, and Fölsche returned to Chemie Lauscha. There he played until the first half of the 1962/63 season (return to the summer-spring season) again in the II. GDR League.

In the neighboring town of Steinach , BSG Motor was promoted to the first GDR league and wanted to strengthen its squad for the second half of the season. In addition, several new players were brought in, including Herbert Fölsche, who is experienced in the upper league. With the help of the reinforcements, the Steinachers managed to march through the GDR league to the upper league in 1963, with Fölsche, who had been used in all 13 point games, had actively helped. Fölsche also had a significant share in relegation in the 1963/64 season, because he was only missing in one of the 26 league games. Coach Heinz Leib initially used him as a half-right striker for nine match days, after which Fölsche mainly played as a right runner . With 23 matches he was a regular player in the second Steinacher Oberliga season in 1964/65. Coach Leib did not use him in a certain core position, but let him play right and left both in midfield and in attack. After two seasons, Motor Steinach could no longer secure relegation and was relegated back to the GDR league. Among the highlights of Fölsche's time in Steinach were appointments to the GDR selection squad. After he had played test matches with a youth team in the spring of 1964, he played two international matches with the national B team in June 1964 and May 1965.

After relegating the league, Fölsche played for Motor Steinach in the GDR league until 1967. While in 1965/66 he was one of the starting eleven with 25 league games, he was only called up in four league games in the 19677/67 season. At the age of 30, he ended his career in competitive football in the summer of 1967.
