In 1958 he achieved promotion with his team for the first time, Steinach rose to the I. GDR League . There Kühn was used in 25 of the 26 point games in 1959, but the BSG Motor rose again to the II. GDR league. It took two seasons before Steinach 1961/62 (introduction of the summer-spring season) again made promotion to the first GDR league. Kühn played a key role in this triumph as the left runner with appearances in all 26 point games and five goals. His goal to the 1-0 victory over ASK Vorwärts Leipzig on the penultimate matchday secured the Steinach promotion.

In his first league season 1963/64 Kühn was regularly used until the twelfth game day, usually as a left runner. In the second half of the season he was only called up in five point games, now in attack. However, he scored his only point goal from midfield. As a striker, Kühn also played the Steinacher's second league season. In his 20 game appearances, he mostly played on the half-right attacking side and scored two goals.

After the 1964/65 season Motor Steinach had to relegate back to the GDR league. Kühn was still active there in the seasons 1965/66 and 1966/67. He played 39 of 60 point games played and scored three points game goals again in 1965/66. At the age of 29, he ended his career as a professional footballer in 1967.
