Wolfgang Wenke (born February 4, 1939 in Breslau ) is a former German football player. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he played 25 games for the company sports community (BSG) Motor Steinach from 1963 to 1965 .

Athletic career

After the Army Sports Club (ASK) Vorwärts Cottbus was promoted to the second-rate GDR league after the 1959 season , the 21-year-old Wolfgang Wenke completed his first 24 second division games for the ASK in 1960 and thus belonged to the Cottbus player base. After he was discharged from the army in October 1960, Wenke joined BSG Motor Steinach, which played in the third-class II. GDR league . With her he returned to the first GDR league after the 1961/62 season (change to the summer-spring game rhythm). There Motor Steinach carried out a march through the league in the following season 1962/63 and rose to the GDR league. Wenke was instrumental in this success as a right defender with 25 appearances from 26 point games.

In his first league season, Wenke played all point games up to the 17th matchday, in which he was mostly called up again as a right-back. Handicapped by injuries, he only made three more point matches. After Motor Steinach had achieved relegation, coach Heinz Leib planned in the second league year with Wenke as a left defender. After the first two league games in this position, Wenke was again injured so badly that he could no longer be used in the first half of the 1964/65 season. In the second half of the season he only played three times in the league. After this season Steinach had to relegate back to the GDR league.

In the GDR league, Wenke played for Motor Steinach until 1972. In 1965/66 he was only able to play half of the point games, after which he was always part of the team for six other seasons. After the 1971/72 season, Wolfgang Wenke ended his career as a high-performance football player. He could look back on 25 league games and 203 second division games.
