Markus Steinhöfer (born March 7, 1986 in Weißenburg in Bavaria ) is a former German soccer player . After various positions at professional clubs at home and abroad, the versatile former junior national player was most recently under contract with VfB Eichstätt in the fourth-class Bavarian regional league .
Career
societies
From Middle Franconia via Munich to Salzburg
Steinhöfer started playing football at DSC Weißenburg, a club based in his hometown, and joined the youth department of 1. FC Nürnberg through TSV Roth . In 2002 he joined the B-Juniors of FC Bayern Munich . After a year he moved up to the A-youth and was with this German A-junior champion . At the same time, from February 2004 he made his first appearances for the amateur team of FC Bayern in the third-class Regionalliga Süd and won the championship title in that division at the end of the season. In the following season he moved up firmly in the amateur squad and reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup , in which the German champions Werder Bremen, after victories against Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach , second division Alemannia Aachen and the northern regional division Eintracht Braunschweig however proved to be too strong. After another season with the amateurs, he was awarded to the Austrian Bundesliga club Red Bull Salzburg in summer 2006 . There he played mostly in the second team in the third-class Regionalliga West, before moving up to the first team in spring 2007, quickly securing a regular place there and becoming the Austrian champions with a clear lead at the end of the season .
The following season he made his first European appearances, but failed with Salzburg in both the Champions League qualification and early in the UEFA Cup . In the league he and his team finished second behind the new champions Rapid Vienna .
In Frankfurt and Kaiserslautern
In summer 2008 he moved back to Germany. His new club, Eintracht Frankfurt, was ninth in the previous Bundesliga season . He was able to establish himself quickly as a midfielder in the team, was mostly in the starting line-up and at the end of the season had played in 32 of the 34 league games, scoring three goals and preparing ten. In terms of sport, the season was rather moderately successful for Eintracht, they managed to stay in league on the penultimate match day, finished the season in thirteenth and failed early in the DFB Cup. Eintracht and trainer Friedhelm Funkel then went their separate ways, the new trainer was Michael Skibbe , under whom Steinhöfer was hardly ever used. He was loaned to the second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern for the second half of the 2009/10 season. With two goals and two assists in 15 games, mostly in the right midfield, he contributed to the Palatinate's promotion to the Bundesliga. In summer 2010 he returned to Eintracht in Frankfurt. Again, he was hardly considered by coach Skibbe and only came on in four league games.
Success in Basel
At the end of January 2011 he moved to the Swiss champions and cup winners FC Basel . There he immediately became a regular under coach Thorsten Fink , mostly as a right-back. With his new team he was eliminated from the Europa League directly against Spartak Moscow and in the national cup they failed at FC Biel-Bienne from midfield of the second division . In the league, however, Steinhöfer only lost one game with FC Basel in the second half of the season and was able to defend the championship title with one point ahead of FC Zurich . The 2011/12 season was even more successful for FC Basel and Steinhöfer as regular players . The championship was won by a wide margin, the national cup was also won and FC Basel was also able to draw attention internationally with Steinhöfer as right-back. In the first round of the Champions League , they met the multiple European Cup winners Benfica Lisbon and Manchester United . In Manchester, FC Basel were 3-2 in the lead until shortly before the end, after trailing 2-0 at halftime, but had to accept the equalizer from Ashley Young . FC Basel was also able to achieve a draw at Benfica. In the last group game, Steinhöfer, who was on the pitch for the full time in all preliminary round matches, met with the team again on Manchester United. Manchester and Benfica were one point ahead of third-placed FC Basel, who advanced to the round of 16 with a 2-1 win instead of the English. There Steinhöfer and his coach Heiko Vogel , who had replaced Thorsten Fink, who had migrated to Hamburger SV in the autumn , met again with Bayern Munich. At home in St. Jakob-Park there was another surprise and the German record champions were defeated 1-0. In the second leg in Munich, however, the so far successful European tour of FC Basel came to an end, in the 7-0 victory of FC Bayern Steinhöfer, who could not get along with his opponent Franck Ribéry , was replaced in the 70th minute.
At the end of the 2012/13 season , Steinhöfer became Swiss champions for the third time with FC Basel; the cup final was lost 4-5 on penalties against Grasshopper Club Zurich . In the Europa League 2012/13 he made it to the semi-finals with FC Basel , where he competed against the reigning Champions League winner FC Chelsea . However, they lost the home and away game and were eliminated with an aggregate result of 2: 5. In a long season with a total of 76 games (36 in the Super League, 6 in the Cup, 20 in the Champions League and Europa League, as well as 14 test games) he had a total of 63 appearances, of which 29 in the Super League, 4 in the Cup and 16 Appearances in the Champions and Europa League and 14 in friendly matches.
Frequent club changes
For the 2013/14 season he moved to the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla , for whom he was on November 3, 2013 (12th matchday) in the 2: 3 defeat in the away game against FC Málaga - with a substitution for Juan Carlos in the 66th minute - debuted.
On January 18, 2014 he returned to his German homeland and signed a contract with the second division TSV 1860 Munich , for which he made his debut on February 10, 2014 in a 1-1 draw at home against Fortuna Düsseldorf . On February 1st, 2015 it was announced that Steinhöfer had terminated his contract with the Munich Lions by mutual agreement. Shortly afterwards he signed up for VfR Aalen .
After VfR Aalen was relegated to the third division , Steinhöfer signed a contract with Czech vice-champions Sparta Prague . He stayed there until the end of the season.
In January 2017 he signed a contract with SV Darmstadt 98 . His contract was terminated after the 2017/18 season .
He then moved to the Bayern Regional Football League for VfB Eichstätt in September 2018 . The reason for this was the birth of his daughter, which is why Steinhöfer wanted to return to his Bavarian homeland. With Eichstätt, he won second place in the league, the Bavarian Amateur Championship, which entitles him to participate in the DFB Cup . He ended his career after the 2018/19 season.
National team
Steinhöfer wore the national jersey for the first time on August 21, 2001 in Parchim , when the U16 national team beat Denmark 's national team 4-1. In the ninth game, his last in this national team, he scored 3-0 in Waldshut-Tiengen in a 3-1 win over the national team from Switzerland, making it 3-0 for the first time.
On March 9 and 11, 2004 he played twice in the U18 national team , which played 1: 1 in Sandhausen and 0: 2 in Neckarelz against the French national team.
On September 17, 2004 Steinhöfer made his debut in the U19 national team , which was defeated 1: 4 in Duisburg against the national team of Spain. In his second international match for this national team, he scored his first international goal in this age group with the opening goal in the 39th minute in the 3-0 win against the national team of Slovenia on October 21, 2004 in Celje .
For the international U21 tournament in Toulon from May 31 to June 9, 2007 Steinhöfer was nominated for the first time for the U21 national team . He made his debut on June 2 in Hyères in a 0-0 draw against the Ivory Coast. He played his last game for the U21 national team on November 18, 2008 in Osnabrück in a 1-0 win over Italy's national team (goal scorer: Toni Kroos ).
