The VfB Eichstätt is a sports club from the Upper Bavarian district town of Eichstaett . The best known is the football department, which has been playing in the Bavarian Regional League since the 2017/18 season after the championship in the Bayernliga Nord 2017. With almost 1200 members (as of March 2018), the association is the second largest association in Eichstatt after the Eichstätt section of the German Alpine Club . So far, the football division's greatest success has been winning the Bavarian Amateur Championship in 2019 and the associated qualification for the 2019/20 DFB Cup .

Total club

The club was founded on August 1, 1920 by about 90 members of the local gymnastics club. On October 14, 1920, the entry was made in the register of associations at the local court in Eichstätt . The club was founded after the local gymnastics club did not want to set up a football department. For this purpose, a separate association was founded with VfB.

The club magazine Sport Echo was first published in the 1960s.

Football department

history

1920 to 1956: early successes

The football department played their first game on October 31, 1920 against Eintracht Weissenburg. On December 19, membership in the South German Football Association followed . The team took part in association games from the 1923/24 season. They played in the A-Class until 1929, but then relegated. After a season break due to the lack of a suitable venue (the VfB pitch, which is still in use today, had to be used for accommodation as part of the Altmühl regulation measures), VfB Eichstätt competed in the B class in 1930/31. With second place at the end of the season, he was immediately promoted back to the A-Class.

The first youth team was set up in 1935. It was a student team that is comparable to today's C-youth .

In 1936 the men's team achieved the championship in the A-class for the first time, but not promotion to the district league. During the Second World War , due to the lack of an organized football league, only friendly matches could be played in the Donau / Ilm area.

After the war, the club was re-approved by the Allied Control Council in 1945 , but the gymnastics club was not. For this reason, many previously active in the gymnastics club joined VfB. From 1946 league games could be played again. In 1948, the club rose as the master of the Donau / Ilm playing area in the then third-class Upper Bavarian District League North. The district leagues were replaced in Bavaria in 1951 by the 2nd amateur league, which was divided into eleven seasons. Eichstätt played in the Oberbayern A.

1956 to 1985: Eventful decades in lower-class leagues

In 1955/56 there was a setback to cope with: The team rose from the (now only fourth class) 2nd Amateur League Upper Bavaria to the A-Class Donau / Ilm and was only just able to avoid relegation the following year. In 1961 they were relegated from the A-Class, but could return to this league a year later.

A highlight was the guest appearance of FC Bayern Munich in 1970 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of VfB Eichstätt in front of 5,000 spectators. There were two more guest appearances by the German record champions in 1984 and 2009. FC Bayern Munich was also a guest in Eichstätt in 1921.

Between 1971 and 1973 there was also a women's team for a short time.

During the 1972 Summer Olympics , the Malaysian national soccer team played a friendly against VfB and won 3-1.

1974 succeeded under coach Horst Blechinger as a master of the A-class Danube / Ilm the promotion to the then fifth-class district league Upper Bavaria-North. The best result here was third place in the 1976/77 season. Just one season later, the club had to relegate to the A-class.

  1. placement in the final table; Since the Second SV Heimstetten was tied, there was a playoff for the championship, which Heimstetten won 2-1.

In 1985, the company was relegated to the B-Class, which marked the beginning of the sporting decline. In the following year, the company was promoted to the A-class again, but it was only possible to stay there until 1990.

A high point for the A-youth was in 1989 when they were invited to a friendly game in England against the U-18 team of Liverpool FC .

In 1991 VfB Eichstätt slipped into the C-class and was thus in the lowest division. Even in spite of various coach changes (for example, the later assistant coach of the Georgian national team Herbert Zanker was also head coach of VfB), there was hardly any progress in terms of sport. In order to bring the club back into higher-class football, Franz Schreiner, a former professional of SpVgg Unterhaching, was hired as a player-coach for the 1998/99 season . Under his leadership, two promotions to the district league were made within three years. In 2002, under the new coach Karl-Heinz Forster, he was promoted to the regional league Upper Bavaria North.

In 2005 Erich Hock took over the team and initiated further professionalization. The championship and thus promotion to the regional league of Upper Bavaria succeeded straight away. Eichstätt was able to keep up well after the promotion and the first year in the new league ended in 3rd place. For the 2007/08 season it was planned to sign Alois Reinhardt as head coach and successor to Erich Hock. However, after he got an offer to coach the A-youth of 1. FC Nürnberg , he canceled VfB. Instead, Sabahattin Koc became the new coach. Despite another third place, his engagement was over after a year. Erich Hock came back and VfB Eichstätt immediately became champions of the regional league. So they played for the first time in the Landesliga Süd in 2009/10 .

2009 to 2012: ups and downs in the national league

In the first year, despite first place in the final table, they were only runner-up after losing the championship playoff against SV Heimstetten tied on points . By missing the championship, they also missed direct promotion and had to relegate to the Bayern League , in which they lost to 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 . A highlight in 2010 was the guest appearance of the Cuban national soccer team in Eichstätt.

Ralf Andresen , also a former professional from SpVgg Unterhaching, was signed for the new season . The Eichstätter, who dominated last year, now played a catastrophic season and fought against relegation. Andresen was released after a short time. The previous co-trainer Jürgen Steib took over the coaching position, supported by Erich Hock as sporting director. Ultimately, the relegation succeeded. In the 2011/12 season, the team finished fourth and, thanks to the extended right of promotion as part of the division reform of the Bavarian Football Association, rose to the Bavarian League.

In the first Bayern League season 2012/13 a ninth place was achieved; 2013/14 followed in 4th place. During the 2014/15 season , Markus Mattes took over the coaching position at VfB Eichstätt from Jürgen Steib. At that time, the club in the Bayernliga Süd was in danger of relegation. Under Mattes, the team could still avert relegation.

Up to and including the 2014/15 season, VfB Eichstätt played in the Bayernliga Süd, and from the 2015/16 season in the Bayernliga Nord. VfB finished the first season in the northern season in second place, but waived the right to promotion for financial reasons and thus did not take part in the relegation to the Bayern Regional Football League . The club won the championship in the 2016/17 Bayernliga season . After applying for a license for the next higher league this time, VfB was promoted to the Bavarian regional league for the first time.

2017/18

In the course of the ascent a new main sponsor was found in Ernst Prost and his company Liqui Moly ; therefore the stadium has been called the Liqui-Moly-Stadion since June 2017, initially for three years . The club had a budget of 150,000 euros for its first regional league season, the smallest budget of all regional league clubs.

In the first games in the Regionalliga 2017/18 the team, barely changed apart from a few newcomers (including Jonas Fries from the second team of 1. FC Nürnberg), regularly demonstrated that they can keep up in the relegation battle and often showed very strong performances . However, there was often a lack of luck in attack and defense, which is why numerous points were left behind. Examples of this are u. a. the games against the second team of FC Bayern Munich and against TSV 1860 Munich , both of which were just lost despite good performances.

In October 2017, the club signed the former second division goalkeeper Michael Gurski , who had already ended his active career in 2015. After the protracted injury of the Eichstätt goalkeeper Thomas Bauer a personnel bottleneck arose, the club decided to sign another player in this position. VfB was able to convince Gurski to resume his active career. He made his debut in the first game after joining the starting XI. In November, Panagiotis Iatrou , without a club at the time , was signed, who was already playing in Greece's second-highest professional league . Kevin Kühnlein from FC Amberg, a central defender with experience in the regional league, came for the winter break .

The second half of the season was much more successful. If you only look at the second half of the season, VfB Eichstätt was ultimately fourth in the table. On the 36th matchday, relegation could be secured prematurely by a 1-0 win against the second team of FC Ingolstadt 04 . At the end of the season, the club finished 7th in the table, making it the second best amateur team in the league and the best promoted team after VfR Garching . The most successful goalscorer was Fabian Eberle with 20 goals this season, making him the third most successful goalscorer in the league.

With a total of 16,078 spectators at the 18 home games and an average of 893 visitors per game, VfB was in 10th place in the audience ranking. Over 1000 visitors came to the stadium three times. The stadium was sold out for the only time against TSV 1860 Munich; 2830 spectators came (the capacity of the stadium was increased from the usual 2090 seats to 2830). The away game against SpVgg Oberfranken Bayreuth on matchday 27, which was won 3-1, was shown live on Sport1 ; 60,000 viewers (120,000 at its peak) watched the game on television.

In the Bavarian Cup 2017/18 , for which you were automatically qualified as a regional league, they made it to the round of 16, where they failed against league rivals SpVgg Oberfranken Bayreuth on penalties.

2018/19

Jonas Greth from TV Aiglsbach, Jens Förtsch from the second team of FC Ingolstadt 04, Marcel Schelle from SV Seligenporten and Mustafa Özhitay from SSV Ulm 1846 also came . Towards the end of the transfer period, the club-free ex-professional player of FC Ingolstadt, Michael Zant, was signed to replace Markus Waffler, who was doing a semester abroad. In September, the then contract-free full-back Markus Steinhöfer was signed , who played in the previous season at SV Darmstadt 98 in the 2nd Bundesliga . To prepare for the new season, u. a. Test matches against TSV 1860 Munich and 1. FC Cologne took place.

VfB Eichstätt played the opening game of the season against Bayern Munich's second team at home; the game was also broadcast live on Sport1 and ended with a 5-1 victory for the guests. As a result, however, the team played very successfully and was able to work their way up to 3rd place in the table on matchday 12. At the end of the first half of the season, the club took second place in the table. One of the highlights of the season was the 3-0 away win against leaders FC Bayern Munich II on matchday 18. A week later, after a 3-1 win in the derby against the second team of FC Ingolstadt, they even ended up in first place. At the winter break after the 22nd matchday, the second team of FC Bayern Munich was level on points and was due to the better Goal difference before VfB Eichstätt, but had also played two games less. Both teams put together the best offensive in the league with 42 goals each; VfB was also fourth among the teams with the best defense after conceding 26 goals. VfB Eichstätt was also the best home team and the third best away team at the winter break. On the 27th matchday, the Eichstätter were able to temporarily regain the championship lead with a 1-0 win against TSV Buchbach after Bayern II had lost to the second team of FC Augsburg , but had also played one game less. The stadium was sold out for the only time against the 2nd team of FC Bayern Munich; 2800 spectators came (the capacity of the stadium was increased once from the usual 2090 seats to 2800).

Niklas Heyen and Christos Patsiouras, two new goalkeepers, were signed during the winter break. With Roussel Ngankam also prominent replacement was brought for Yomi Scintu which to Bethlehen Steel FC , the farm team of the MLS - franchises Philadelphia Union , in the USL Championship changed.

In the Bavarian Cup 2018/19 they were eliminated in the second round against Bayern league club TSV 1896 Rain on penalties.

The players, coaches and supervisors of VfB Eichstätt thank the home fans after the game of the 1st main round of the DFB Cup 2019/20 in the Audi Sportpark between VfB Eichstätt and Hertha BSC (1: 5).

The squad had to be significantly rebuilt after various players left the club, including numerous important supporters such as Thomas Haas, Michael Zant (both for Türkgücü Munich ), Marcel Schelle (for VfB Lübeck ), Markus Steinhöfer (end of career) and Mustafa Özhitay (without a club ). The departures were v. a. compensated with players from the regional league Bavaria and lower-class leagues.

When the club participated in the DFB Cup for the first time, VfB Eichstätt met Hertha BSC in the first round . The game had to be played in the Audi-Sportpark in Ingolstadt due to the high number of copies of the DFB . It ended 1: 5, which means Eichstätt was eliminated from the DFB Cup.

At the start of the 2019–21 regional league season , VfB managed a 7-0 win against SV Schalding-Heining. Mattes has been the coach with the most games for VfB Eichstätt since this season. The season is overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic , which resulted in the league being disrupted from March 2020. According to a decision by the clubs represented in the Bavarian Regional League, the league should not be canceled (like the four other regional leagues), but continued in September and played to the end by spring 2021.

In July 2020, Captain Benjamin Schmidramsl announced his immediate retirement. He belonged his entire career to VfB Eichstätt.

The coaching staff includes head coach Markus Mattes, assistant coach Michael Panknin and goalkeeping coach Norbert Scheuerer.

Second team

The second team of VfB Eichstätt plays in the district league Oberbayern Nord in the 2019/20 season . In 2017/18 she was promoted to champion of the district league 1 - Danube / Isar .

youth

In the youth sector, the club has been providing independent teams in all age groups from U19 to U9 since July 1, 2018 . The U19 will play in the Oberbayern regional league in the 2019/20 season.

Between 2008 and 2018, the club only provided separate teams for the U9 and U11 . The rest of the youngsters ( U19 , U17 , U15 and U13 ) were organized in the Junior Support Association (JFG) Region Eichstätt, which also included DJK Eichstätt, FC Türkgücü Eichstätt and DJK Preith. Due to this special situation, VfB Eichstätt had to pay a fine of 3,000 euros to the Bavarian Football Association after promotion to the regional league, as the Bavarian Football Association had at least three independent youth teams for all teams in its top division, including at least one A and one B Youth team, presupposes. In order to meet the requirements of the association, the JFG was dissolved on July 1, 2018; the teams in question now compete as VfB Eichstätt .

The youth department has been successful in sport in the past and has received various awards several times, including: a. with the Sepp Herberger certificate from the Bavarian Football Association and in 2000 with the DFB honorary award for youth leader Fred Pfaller.

With the Heiner-Zieglwalner-Cup , the association organizes an indoor tournament for youth teams with a nationwide field of participants every winter.

VfB Eichstätt is the perspective team location of FC Ingolstadt 04.

Self-marketing

A permanent banner attached to the outside of the stadium for self-marketing by the football department with the team's nickname: "The Boys"

As usual in higher-class football, the club tries to market itself in various ways. Part of the self-image was the nickname "The Boys", which is intended to symbolize the special team spirit and is presented with its own logo. After the promotion to the regional league, this marketing strategy was supplemented by the slogan “come to stay”. Other advertising slogans are “never give up” and “never without my team”.

In addition to the regular club crest, there is also another logo that is used for marketing purposes and was designed by some of the players themselves.

Part of the PR strategy after the regional league promotion is also an expanded range of fan articles. Even in the big leagues, people began to use social networks intensively. In cooperation with the local transport company Jägle Verkehrsbetriebe , a separate team bus in the team colors and affixed sponsor logos was purchased in 2016, which is used outside of the match days in normal regular service.

The stadium magazine is called Kick and is distributed free of charge at every home game.

Heart of Courage by Two Steps from Hell is used as inlet music . Two school classes composed a club anthem in 2019, which is now officially used by the club. An instrumental jingle of this also serves as a goal anthem from time to time; in this function, however, the song Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes is used.

Sponsors

Entrance to the guest block of the Liqui Moly Stadium; The main sponsor's banners are clearly visible.

The main sponsor has been Liqui Moly since the 2017/18 season; the company also gives its name to the stadium. Other sponsors include a. Audi , Audi BKK , Hofmühl private brewery , Jägle Verkehrsbetriebe , Continental AG , Sparkasse Ingolstadt Eichstätt and Volksbank Raiffeisenbank Bayern Mitte . The supplier is the Jako company .

Spectators and fan culture

The fan scene has grown due to the promotion to the regional league. However, this still consists mainly of long-established oak leaves and students. An organized fan scene is practically non-existent, but there are some long-time supporters who supported the team even in the times of low-class football. A small fan club called Green White Unity was formed in 2019, it consists mainly of young supporters who especially cheer the team on during the games.

In the days of the Bayern League, VfB-Eichstätt's home games saw an average of between 300 and 360 people; In the year of promotion, a little euphoria began about the club, which increased the number of viewers to an average of almost 500 people. In the first two years of the regional league, the team finally had an average attendance of around 900 people. In the current 2019/20 season, however, this number fell back to 668 (as of matchday 13; September 28, 2019). The club's record number of spectators in the Regionalliga Bayern was set up during the game against TSV 1860 Munich (1: 2) in the 2017/18 season: with 2830 spectators (the capacity of the stadium was increased once), the stadium was sold out. Almost as many people also say the game against FC Bayern's second team in the 2018/19 season; 2800 spectators came to the stadium, which was sold out again. Apart from that, only a few more times have more than 1000 spectators come to a regional league home game of VfB Eichstätt.

Other departments

Currently existing departments

Currently, besides the football department also divisions for existing Gymnastics / Gym , unicycle , volleyball , badminton , Fistball and Quidditch .

In the 2019/20 season, the volleyball department consists of a women's team, three youth teams for girls, a mixed team and a leisure team. The women's team plays in the District League West.

Badminton is not operated as part of a league, but as a pure recreational sport. It is similar with the Turner department.

Historically, there were also departments for table tennis, tennis, athletics , chess, fencing, judo, skiing , stick shooting, handball and aerobics, as well as a recreational sports group.

History of the other departments

The association was originally v. a. founded as a football club. A year after the club was founded, an athletics department was added and a little later a department for fistball. From 1935 table tennis was also played; In 1950, a department that no longer exists was set up for this purpose. This was temporarily active in the Bayern League. In 1949 a tennis department was established. But as early as 1961 this became independent. This is the still existing TC Rot / Weiß Eichstätt. In 1951, the club was again expanded by a department: the Eichstätt chess club joined the VfB. In the present, however, this department no longer exists.

The handball department was founded in 1953; however, a women's team existed before the Second World War. The following year, fencing and judo departments were added. The fencers were quite successful, for example in 1956 they became Bavarian team champions in foil fencing . From 1957, the municipal gymnasium was no longer available to the club after it was rented to Triumph International . As a result, the fencing (September 1960), table tennis and handball departments changed to the police sports club. Judo is no longer offered in the club either.

From 1973 to the beginning of the 1980s, the club also had a section for asphalt stick shooting . At the time of the 1972 Summer Olympics, the volleyball department that still exists today was added. In 1983 an aerobics division that no longer existed was founded.

The square was renewed after the Second World War and reopened in 1946. In 1968 the floodlights and the loudspeaker system were installed. By the 1989 season, the athletic sports facilities were expanded. The stadium property is owned by the club.

Since summer 2017 it has been named after the new main sponsor Liqui Moly. It was previously named after the previous main sponsor, Westpark . In order to meet the requirements of the Bavarian Football Association for the regional league, the stadium had to be rebuilt for the 2017/18 season .

For league games, the stadium has a maximum capacity of 2090 seats. At the friendly against 1. FC Nürnberg on June 27, 2017, however, 3,800 people saw the game, which meant a new attendance record for the Liqui-Moly Stadium. The game ended 1: 2 (1: 0). For the league game against TSV 1860 Munich on October 3, 2017, the capacity of the stadium was increased once to 2,830 seats. The capacity was also increased once for the opening game of the Regionalliga Bayern 2018/19 against the second team of FC Bayern Munich; 2800 spectators came to the stadium.

In addition to the stadium, the club also has a new artificial turf pitch that was built in 2017. In addition to a floodlight system, the course also has various playing field markings and can thus be variably divided into small fields. He has a license for league games up to the top division.

The artificial turf pitch was financed for the most part by the city of Eichstätt with 700,000 euros; the rest of the costs were raised by the association itself.

VfB Eichstätt uses this pitch primarily as a training ground. The second team also plays some of their home games on the artificial turf pitch. The space is also rented to other associations and schools as well as the university, whereby associations from the city of Eichstätt and the women's department of the FV Obereichstätt can rent the space much cheaper.

Further

The soccer field at the cafeteria of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt is used as a further training opportunity, especially for young people. Although this belongs to the university, it was left to VfB Eichstätt for use. It has had a floodlight system since 1999.

In addition, the club had tennis courts right next to the stadium, which have hardly been used since the tennis department was split off. These were converted into parking spaces for the Eichstätter Klinik in 2019. There are also facilities for volleyball, athletics, handball and curling.

Other sports facilities in the city are also used for the individual departments, such as B. School sports halls, the triple gym in the Schottenau sports center and the university sports facility on the Seidlkreuz.

Between 1928 and 1930, the football department had to move to the parade ground of the state police after accommodations for workers were built on VfB-Platz as part of the Altmühl's regulatory measures.

Clubhouse

The clubhouse, which is still in use today, was inaugurated in 1959. It was expanded in 1963. From 1983 to 1984 it was expanded again, this time with a sanitary wing.
