The Hofmühl private brewery is a German brewery in Eichstätt in Bavaria . It was founded in 1492. Around 85,000 hl of beer are produced annually.

The brewery was founded in 1492 by Prince-Bishop Wilhelm von Reichenau . The brewery was completely destroyed in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt from 1639 to 1686 under the Prince-Bishops Marquard II. Schenk von Castell and Johann Euchar Schenk von Castell .
After the secularization in 1803 the brewery was nationalized. As a result, the brewery first came into the possession of the Grand Duke of Tuscany and Elector of Salzburg , Ferdinand III, and from 1817 to the Prince of Leuchtenberg . In 1855 the princes of Leuchtenberg sold the principality of Eichstätt and with it the Hofmühl brewery to the Kingdom of Bavaria . The run-down brewery was sold to the brewer Michael Gutmann in 1860; In 1855 he acquired the former princely brewery in Titting .
In 1876 Michael Gutmann bequeathed the brewery to his daughter Creszentia, who married Johann Baptist Emslander. The brewery is still owned by the Emslander family today. During the Second World War , thin beer had to be brewed due to a lack of raw materials . After the war things went up again. In 1948 wheat beer was added to the range and in 1950 the production of lemonades began. 1963 was first Pils brewed. Ten years later the brewery's total output was 30,000 hl. Its own malt house was operated until 1970 .

In the following years Hofmühl took over several breweries from the area, for example the Fottner brewery in Weißenburg in 1970, the Neuhof brewery in Neuburg in 2004 and the Roth city brewery in 2006 . In 2008 the brewery sponsored the DTM . The Audi A4 DTM of the Audi customer team Futurecom TME was driven by Katherine Legge . Because of the large-scale brewery advertising and the ban on alcohol advertising, the Audi had to be taped around at the race in Le Mans .
At the beginning of 2018, an advertising campaign by the brewery caused a sensation in which a woman and two crates of beer were photographed from above. The photo is part of a calendar, but was also posted on Facebook . The image composition focuses on the breasts of the person pictured and the crates of beer. The photo was supplemented with the text “It depends on the content”. The brewery has been accused of sexism from several different sources . The German Advertising Council examined the case. Its managing director Julia Busse confirms in an initial assessment that this advertising could actually be classified as "sexist". Ultimately, however, the German Advertising Council did not raise any objections after Hofmühl himself removed the photo in question from her Facebook presence and assured her that it would no longer be used.

Awards
The Hofmühl brewery is one of the first solar-powered beer breweries in the world. The use of solar energy saves 80,000 liters of heating oil every year. The brewery Hofmühl allowed the beer from the solar innovation and marketing company in Oberpfaffenhofen assigned Siegel Solar beer use.
Further awards are the annual DLG prizes, the European Environment Prize 2002 for the brewing technology “Merlin” and the European Beer Tasting Award 2005. In addition, one received the Quality Taste Award Belgium 2005 and the Bavarian State Prize.
In 2008 the brewery received the Bavarian Energy Prize for its solar process thermal power plant.
The Hofmühl brewery is also the first brewery that is allowed to bear the label " Controlled Quality - SGS Institut FRESENIUS ".

The company is active as a sponsor in the sports sector. In 2008, the company advertised in motorsport on the Audi A4 DTM of the Audi customer team Futurecom TME owned by Katherine Legge. In football you appear as a partner of VfB Eichstätt and SV Marienstein. In the latter case, Hofmühl is also the name sponsor of the sports grounds, which are called Hofmühl Sports Park .
