history

The brewery in the castle from above

The brewery was founded in 1707 by the Eichstätt prince-bishop Johann Anton I. Knebel von Katzenelnbogen , so in 2007 the 300th anniversary could be celebrated. In 1808, after secularization , the brewery came into the possession of the Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1821 the brewery went into private ownership. From 1845 to 1855 it was owned by the Dukes of Leuchtenberg, Duke Eugen von Leuchtenberg . In 1855 Michael Gutmann from Kindingen bought the brewery for 49,000 guilders . The Hofmühl brewery in Eichstätt was also owned by the Gutmann family at that time. The wheat beer that dominates the range today was brewed for the first time in 1913. The brewery still has its own malt house today .
