The FC United Zurich ( Football Club United Zurich ) is a Swiss football club from the city of Zurich . The first team will play interregional in the 2nd league in the 2019/20 season . The club's greatest success was promotion to the Promotion League in 2016.
history
The club was founded on July 1, 1985 by the community of Turkish origin in Zurich as FC Fenerbahce Zurich and played in the deepest regional leagues. The former Turkish-dominated club has since then increasingly moved away from its roots, so that recently there were no Turks in the squad.
In 2008, in the middle of the relegation battle in the 4th division , Orhan Yilmaz and Bernhard Fanger took over FC Fenerbahce , with the aim of building a new club with a “ multi-cultural ” philosophy in Zurich. On March 18, 2010, the name was changed to FC United Zurich in order to demonstrate the opening for all nationalities . Meanwhile in the 3rd league , the club announced in a double-sided newspaper advertisement, "to light the FCZ , GC , YB , FCB , FCSG and FCL [to] light a fire under the bum". The aim is to become Swiss champions in 2018. This PR campaign caused quite a stir, and there were also reactions from the major Zurich clubs FCZ and GC.
With the help of new signings from ex-professional players and Massimo Rizzo as coach, then assistant coach at FC Zurich , the second and third promotion could be achieved by 2012. From 2012, FC United Zurich played interregional in the 2nd league . In January 2013, the founders Yilmaz and Fanger resigned. Gabriel Zeyrek could be found as his successor, who again insisted on promotion, which is why the former Super League coach Ryszard Komornicki was hired, who immediately led the club to the top of the table.
In the 2014/15 season, the club was promoted to the first division . There they immediately reached 3rd place and thus qualification for the promotion games to the Promotion League . In the first round, Stade Lausanne-Ouchy beat the team that had scored the most points in qualifying, but then failed in the second round at FC La Chaux-de-Fonds . Due to the bankruptcy of FC Biel-Bienne , however, a third promoted team was exceptionally identified, so FC United Zurich played a barrage game against FC Baden , which they defeated 2-0.
In this most successful phase of the club, the players included many ex-professionals such as the player- coach Savvas Exouzidis (ex- Panionios Athens ), Gabriel Machado (ex- GC Zurich ) and Thomas Weller (ex- FC St. Gallen ). The supposed transfer coups Ronaldo and Rivaldo never materialized.
In December 2016 Piero Bauert, who is also responsible for league competitor SC YF Juventus , became president. As a result, the coach and a large part of the squad were changed. In May 2017, FC United Zurich was relegated, but benefited again from the green table due to the withdrawal of FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne . After Bauert's resignation, there was another change of ownership. This time the leaders of the SAFP players' union took over. In the following season they rose from last place in the first division. The next relegation to the 2nd interregional league followed in the 2018/19 season.
