The African Nations Cup 1978 ( Engl. : African Cup of Nations , French. : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the eleventh playout of the African continental championship in football and was from 5 to 16 March for the second time since 1963 in Ghana instead . Organized by the African continental football association Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), eight teams from Ghana , PR Congo , Morocco , Nigeria , Upper Volta , Zambia , Tunisia and Uganda took part.
As in previous years, there was also a qualification to reduce the field of participants from 27 applicants to eight finalists, with the host Ghana and defending champion Morocco automatically qualifying.
As usual, the game was played with two groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group then played the tournament winner from the semi-finals in the knockout system . The final round matches were played at the Accra Sports Stadium in Accra and the Kumasi Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Host Ghana was able to use its home advantage, won the tournament and after 1963 (also as host) and 1965 became African champions in football for the third time and thus the sole record holder.
