The 33rd Africa Cup of Nations ( English 2021 Africa Cup of Nations , French Coupe d'Afrique des Nations 2021 ) was held in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022 . This was decided by the African Football Association CAF on June 30, 2020. The tournament was originally supposed to be played from January 9 to February 6, 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the unpredictable course in Africa, it was postponed by a year . As was the case with the last Africa Cup of Nations in 201924 teams from the continent took part in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. It was first played in a group phase in six groups of four teams and then from the round of 16 in the knockout system .
Senegal won for the first time , beating Egypt 4-2 on penalties in the final at the Stade Paul Biya after losing 0-0 after extra time . The third - place match was won by hosts Cameroon 3-3 after regular time and a 5-3 penalty shootout against Burkina Faso . Cameroon's Vincent Aboubakar was top scorer with eight goals.
organizer
By November 2013, a total of six national football associations had applied to jointly award the 2019 and 2021 finals. These were Algeria , the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Ivory Coast , Gabon , Guinea and Zambia . By the end of January 2014, three associations, Algeria, Ivory Coast and Guinea, had submitted their applications for 2021. On 20 September 2014, the 2019 finals were awarded to Cameroon, 2021 to Ivory Coast and 2023 to Guinea.
On November 30, 2018, the CAF announced that Cameroon had lost its right to host the 2019 tournament due to delays in infrastructure projects at the planned venues. On January 8, 2019, the CAF awarded the tournament to Egypt instead. However, the continental association allowed Cameroon to host the 2021 tournament. This means that all host countries have been pushed back by two years, with Ivory Coast hosting 2023 and Guinea hosting 2025 .

qualification
52 teams registered for the qualification, which, like in 2019 , was held in two rounds. Eritrea and Somalia did not participate. Reunion and Zanzibar were not full members of the CAF and thus excluded from participation. In the July 2019 draw, the participating teams were divided into five different pots based on their positions in the FIFA World Ranking as of 14 June 2019. The eight weakest teams determined in this way played against each other in the first round in October 2019 in a knockout system with a return match.
The four winners of the first round and the remaining 44 higher-ranked teams had previously been drawn into twelve groups of four in July 2019. The second round was to be played in a double round robin format from November 2019 to November 2020. Due to several postponements, the last game did not take place until June 2021. As in 2019, the matches of the final tournament hosts who took part in Group F were counted as regular.
The group winners and runners-up from all twelve groups, with the exception of Group F, qualified for the finals. From Group F, only one other team qualifies alongside hosts Cameroon. For Gambia and Comoros it was the first participation in the Africa Cup, Mauritania made it to the finals for the second time after 2019.
draw
The group draw took place in Yaoundé on August 17, 2021 . The Cameroonian side , as hosts, were automatically seeded at the head of Group A, while Algeria , as the defending champions, were also seeded in Pot 1. The remaining teams were distributed according to their respective placements in the FIFA World Ranking of August 12, 2021.

Venues
The tournament was played in six stadiums in the five cities of Bafoussam , Douala , Garoua , Limbé and Yaoundé , with two stadiums being used in the capital. Four of the six stadiums were new construction, the remaining two were renovated for the Africa Cup of Nations and the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 . Three stadiums have already hosted the 2021 Nations Cup, with the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in the capital also hosting the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations .
Four of the six stadiums had a capacity of between 20,000 and 45,000 spectators. The largest stadium was the Stade Paul Biya in the capital Yaoundé with a capacity of 60,000 spectators, while the two smallest stadiums, the Stade Omnisports de Bafoussam and the Stade Omnisport de Limbé , could only seat 20,000 spectators.

Third-place rankings
The four best third-placed teams played in the round of 16 against the group winners of groups A, B, C and D. The exact pairings depended on which groups the third-placed teams qualified from. For each of the fifteen options, a table in the official regulations defines the allocation as follows.

final round
The final round was played in a knockout system . If there was a draw after 90 minutes of regular play, there was an extra period of two 15-minute periods and possibly (if there was still no winner) a penalty shoot-out . The only exception was the game for third place, in which a draw was followed directly by a penalty shootout.

Due to an exchange program, one referee each ( Mario Escobar from Guatemala) and one assistant from CONCACAF were among them. A referee, two assistants and a video assistant were also nominated. Salima Mukansanga became the first woman to serve as a referee at the Africa Cup of Nations. Two referees each came from Egypt and Senegal, while eleven referees came from an association whose team failed to qualify for the competition.
Unlike in 2019 , video evidence was used from the first game. The referee was assisted by a video assistant team consisting of one video assistant and two other assistant referees.

Special Occurrences
A stampede broke out in front of Stade Paul Biya ahead of the round of 16 match between hosts Cameroon and Comoros on January 24, 2022, killing at least eight people and injuring several people. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the stadium capacity was reduced from 60,000 spectators to a maximum of 48,000 spectators. The panic ensued as stewards closed the gates to the stadium and more spectators tried to enter the stadium. In response to the events, the third quarterfinals and first semifinals were moved from Stade Paul Biya to Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo .
