John Joseph Cranley (born February 28, 1974 in Green Township , Hamilton County , Ohio ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Democratic Party and has been the 69th Mayor of Cincinnati since December 1, 2013 .

Life

John Cranley was born in Green Township, a suburb of Cincinnati, and grew up the son of an estate planner and teacher in Price Hill , a borough in southwest Cincinnati. After graduating from school in 1992, Cranley studied political science at John Carroll University , graduating magna cum laude . He then studied law at Harvard University and earned the degree of Juris Doctor .

After graduating from college, Cranley returned to Cincinnati and worked as a lawyer . From 2000 to 2009 on the Cincinnati City Council . In 2002, Cranley co-founded the Ohio Innocence Project at the University of Cincinnati , where he was director of administration until 2006. In 2000 and 2006, Cranley ran for the seat of the 1st Congressional electoral district of Ohio State in the US House of Representatives , but he lost both elections to Republican incumbent Steve Chabot . In January 2009, Cranley resigned from the Cincinnati City Council eleven months ahead of the scheduled end of his term.

In September 2013, John Cranley was selected in an internal party primary for the Democratic candidate in the mayoral election of Cincinnati, which he won on November 5, 2013 with 57.92 percent of the vote against Roxanne Qualls . He was sworn into office on December 1, 2013. In the mayoral election on November 7, 2017, Cranley was re-elected, he received 53.95 percent of the vote in front of the also Democratic rival candidates Yvette Simpson and Rob Richardson, Jr. Cranley's term ends in 2021.

In addition to his later political activities, John Cranley worked in a law firm until his election as mayor. He is married and has a son. Cranley lives with his family in Mount Lookout , a neighborhood in the extreme southeast of Cincinnati.
