The sixth African Nations Championship (officially English 2020 African Nations Championship ), organized by the Confederation of African Football will, in January 2021 Cameroon will be played.

Originally it was supposed to take place in Cameroon in April 2020. It is to take place for the fifth time with 16 teams. Cameroon received the right to host after Ethiopia admitted that it was unable to exercise the right to host. On March 17th, the CAF announced that the tournament would have to be postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic . At the end of June 2020, January 2021 was named as the new event date.

In contrast to the African Football Championship , only players who play in the national leagues of their home countries are eligible to play in the Nations Cup. The defending champion is the team of Morocco .

qualification

The qualification took place between April 20, 2019 and October 20, 2019.

A total of 47 of the possible 53 states had announced that they would participate in the qualification. The Djiboutian national soccer team and the Gabonese national soccer team have been excluded from participation due to their withdrawal from the ongoing qualification for the 2018 tournament . In addition, Gambia , Sierra Leone (suspended by FIFA), Eritrea and Egypt all canceled their participation.

Two teams each qualified from the North , West A and Central zones and three teams each from the Central-East , West B and South zones . The host Cameroon (from Central) is also automatically qualified.

The game is played in a preliminary round with four groups of four national teams each. The best two teams in each group advance to the main rounds according to the knockout system . Host Cameroon is set as the head of Group A.
