Corsino Fortes
Corsino António Fortes (born February 14, 1933 in Mindelo on São Vicente ; † July 24, 2015 there ) was a Cape Verdean poet and politician. He is considered one of the outstanding representatives of Cape Verdean poetry.
Life
Corsino Fortes studied law in Lisbon , where he graduated in 1966. He then worked as a teacher and lawyer in Cape Verde and as a judge in Angola . He was also a fan of experimental television in Cape Verde.
He had already published in magazines and newspapers before his first volume of poetry appeared in 1974. Since then he has been an integral part of the island republic's literary life: he was president of the Cape Verdean writers' association, from 2013 until his death president of the Cape Verdean academy for literature and for a long time president of the Fundação (foundation) Amílcar Cabral . His work was also translated into English for the first time in 2015. It consists mainly of poetry that deals with the living environment on the islands and the struggle with independence and social problems.
As a politician, Fortes, who was a member of the Partido Africano da Independência de Cabo Verde (PAICV), belonged to various Cape Verdean governments and was, among other things, Minister of Justice. He was also the first ambassador of the Republic of Cape Verde to Portugal in 1975.
Fortes died on July 24, 2015 at the age of 82 from complications from cancer in his hometown of Mindelo, two days after the publication of his last volume of poetry, Sinos de Silencio .
