Palos Blancos ( Spanish for " White Post ") is a town in the Tarija Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Palos Blancos is the most populous town in the Vicecantón Chimeo in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Entre Ríos in the province of Burnet O'Connor . It is located at an altitude of 721  m on the left western bank of the Río Palos Blancos , which flows north into the Río Pilcomayo . The town is bounded by ridge ridge running north-south, rising to almost 1000 meters west of the town and more than 1200 m east of Palos Blancos.

Palos Blancos is located in the Bolivian Cordillera Oriental in the transition area between the Bolivian Altiplano and the sparsely populated Gran Chaco in the lowlands. The climate is subtropical and is characterized by a clear contrast between the dry season and the rainy season .

Palos Blancos is 181 kilometers by road and a five-hour drive east of Tarija , the capital of the department.

Tarija is on the Ruta 1 highway , which crosses the Bolivian highlands from north to south and runs from Desaguadero on the Peruvian border via the metropolises of El Alto , Oruro and Potosí to Bermejo on the Argentine border. Eight kilometers southeast of Tarija, the Route 11 branches off to the east, which leads via Junacas Sur and Entre Ríos to Palos Blancos and on via Villamontes and Ibibobo to Cañada Oruro on the border with Paraguay . In Villamontes, Ruta 11 crosses the highway Ruta 9 , which connects the Bolivian lowlands of Guayaramerín in the north via Santa Cruz with the border town of Yacuiba in the south.

The Ruta 11 near Palos Blancos is also the end point of the trunk road Ruta 29 , which leads from here in a southerly direction up the Río Palos Blancos and past the village of Caraparí to Campo Pajoso on the Ruta 9 , which is only a few kilometers from the town of Yacuiba away. Caraparí, in turn, is the end point of Ruta 33 , which continues south to Bermejo on the border with Argentina .
