Itaú is a town in the Tarija Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Itaú is a central place in the canton of Itaú in the municipality of Caraparí in the southwestern part of the Gran Chaco province . The village is located at an altitude of 990 m at the mouth of the Río El Sauce in the Río Itaú , which becomes the Río Grande de Tarija downstream . The place lies between the north-south running Voranden chains of the Serranía Suaruro and the Serranía Aguaragüe .

Itaú lies between the Bolivian Andes chains in the west and the lowlands of the subtropical Gran Chaco in the east. The climate is subtropical with hot humid summers and moderately warm and dry winters.

Transport network
Itaú lies at a distance of 220 kilometers by road east of Tarija , the capital of the department.
From Itaú, a dirt road leads 23 kilometers northwards via Zapatera Norte to the Ruta 29 trunk road , which, coming from the south, leads from Caraparí via Acheral to Palos Blancos and meets Ruta 11 there. This leads 173 kilometers to the west and meets the Ruta 1 eight kilometers before Tarija , which from there crosses the entire Altiplano to the north and finally reaches Desaguadero on the Peruvian border via the large cities of Potosí , Oruro and El Alto .
