On October 31, 1944, Athos de Lemos Rache, Amyntas Jacques de Moraes and Persival Farquhar founded the Companhia de Aços Especiais Itabira (Acesita) in Itabira . The aim was to supply the growing Brazilian market with steel due to the increasing industrialization of the country , which had to struggle with import problems at the beginning of the Second World War . In 1965, Acesita first came up with the idea of ​​producing stainless steel . To this end, the German engineer , Heinrich Hellbrügge, was taken under contract.

In 1998 the French steel manufacturer Usinor took over Acesita. After the takeover by Arcelor Mittal in 2007, the company name was changed to ArcelorMittal Inox Brazil . In 2009 net sales were 2.1 billion reals and the company controls 78% of the Brazilian stainless steel market. In 2011 the company was renamed Aperam South America .

activities

Products are mainly stainless steel (2006: 371kT) and silicon steels (GO / GNO) (2006: 187kT). The only plant is located in Timóteo in the state of Minas Gerais . In addition, the company owns (126,000 ha) eucalyptus plantations for the production of charcoal, which is used in the blast furnace process, as well as several service centers such as in São Paulo . Aperam is the market leader for flat stainless steel in Latin America and exports 31% of its production to Asia , Europe and North America .
