Flat steel is a piece of steel rolled flat into long bars . Flat steel is  standardized in EN 10058, which  replaced DIN 1017 in 2004 . In the past, the less applicable generic term flat iron was also used. Production takes place in the rolling mill , and since around 1985 increasingly also in integrated steelworks .

Flat steel is an important intermediate , semi-finished or raw material for the processing industry . Double T and U profiles for steel construction are usually rolled as a whole; However, larger box and special profiles are welded together from individual flat steels (upper chord , lower chord and web plate) .

Dimensions and boundaries

Flat steel in the form of a bar has a rectangular cross-section, the width of which is significantly greater than its thickness. In contrast, compact and square profiles, whose widths and thicknesses are similar, are referred to as steel bars . Flat steel in bar form and bars are among the long products whose lengths are much greater than their thicknesses and widths, and not to the flat products .

Flat steel with a material thickness of less than 5 mm is referred to as strip steel , as is profiles from 110 mm wide and less than 8 mm thick. Flat steel over 150 mm wide is more precisely referred to as wide flat steel , from 300 mm wide one speaks of sheet metal .

Sheet metal products, cut into sheets or rolled up on coils are delivered, are according to DIN EN 10079 not for flat steel, but to flat products (as flatware or flat product called).

A special flat profile with a one-sided thickening (bead) that runs over the entire length of the profile is known as a Holland profile , bead profile or bead flat steel .
