history
Schuyler was established in 1866 as a train depot for the Union Pacific Railroad under the name Shell Creek Station . In 1869, Platte County was divided into three smaller administrative units, and Colfax County was formed. A year later, Shell Creek Station was renamed Schuyler, officially registered as a city and made a county seat. It was named after the US Vice President Schuyler Colfax . The city experienced growth mainly through cowboys from Texas, who drove their cattle to Schuyler. At that time the city had over 600 inhabitants. However, a drought and a plague of locusts limited the population growth for a short time in the following years. But already in 1900 the city had 2,157 inhabitants. The numbers rose steadily to 2,500 in 1930, over 3,000 (1960) and 4,151 (1980) to finally 6,211 in 2010.
