history
Madison was founded in May 1867 by Henry Barnes, who set up camp on the banks of Union Creek, and 20 German families from Wisconsin . It was named after US President James Madison . On October 12, 1875, Madison was elected to the county seat of Madison County. The main reason for this decision was that Madison had had a newspaper with the Madison Review since 1874 (until 1878). Its successor was the Chronicle from 1879. Madison was officially registered as a city on July 6, 1876. The Union Pacific Railroad connected the city with Columbus in the south and Norfolk in the north from December 30, 1879 . This drove the growth of the city, so that by the end of the nineteenth century it had a population of 300. Today agriculture (rearing, meat processing, dairy) is the biggest economic factor in Madison.
