history

In 1867 the railway line built by the Union Pacific Railroad reached what is now Ogallala. At first there was only a simple house with a dining room for travelers, in 1868 a shop and a saloon were opened, and from 1873 there was a post office. The place became a well-known destination of the cattle drive from Texas, here the cattle were loaded onto the railroad. The place was named after the Oglala , a Lakota tribe from the Sioux , whose tribal area was in western Nebraska in the middle of the 19th century. In 1884 Ogallala received the status of a local authority .
