Hamilton County had 9,403 people as of the 2000 census . 148 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,503 households and 2,676 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.43 percent white, 0.18 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian and 0.49 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.14 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,503 households, 37.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 67.4 percent were married couples living together, 5.9 percent were single mothers, 23.6 percent were non-families, 21.1 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.07.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 29.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or over.
