Monowi is a municipality in Boyd County in the US state of Nebraska . The special thing about the small town is that, according to the 2010 census, it only has one inhabitant who also holds the office of mayor .
The place was founded around 1900. The place name is said to be the Indian word for a small white prairie flower that was widespread in the area at the time the place was founded. In 1930 the village had a little over 120 inhabitants. After the railway withdrew from the village, the inhabitants gradually left the village. While there were 99 inhabitants in 1940, the number dropped to 2 by the time the population was counted in 2000 and finally to one in 2010. Monowi has a library , Rudy's Library (the library of the late husband of the last resident), with 5,000 books and an inn, Monowi Tavern , both of which are run by the sole resident.
In 2018 the place and its inhabitant were immortalized by Lilo Mangelsdorff with the documentary film Monowi, Nebrasksa . American television stations, the BBC and the New York Times also reported on the place.
Another place with only one resident is PhinDeli in the state of Wyoming .
