history
Before the first European settlement, five Aboriginal clans of the Ngarrindjeri lived in the Coorong and Meningie area. When the British colonized this area, disease and massacre reduced their numbers from an estimated 3,200 in 1842 to 511 in 1874.
The first European to come to this area was Charles Sturt in 1829, who reached Lake Alexandria at the mouth of the Murray River on February 9, 1830 .
Sheep and ranchers followed Sturt in the 1840s and a road from Adelaide to Melbourne was built. They practiced agriculture , the soil and also sufficient water offered the possibility for the successful development of agriculture. There is also a large fleet of fishing boats in Meningie Harbor.
The city was given the name by Governor Sir Henry Lionel Galway and it was surveyed in 1866.
