Georg Macco (born March 23, 1863 in Aachen , † April 20, 1933 in Genoa ) was a German landscape painter and illustrator of the Düsseldorf School and Expressionism .

Live and act

Just like his great-great-uncle, the history and portrait painter Alexander Macco (1767–1849), who in 1802 had portrayed the Queen of Prussia Luise von Mecklenburg-Strelitz and was a close friend and admirer of Beethoven and Goethe , Georg Macco also decided on an artist career. Between 1880 and 1887 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Eugen Gustav Dücker and Johann Peter Theodor Janssen and made drawings for The Gazebo and coat of arms drawings for the works of his brother Hermann Friedrich Macco . He then moved to Munich to study and took numerous trips from here, which provided him with inspiration and motifs for his works of art. This is how he created series of paintings from the Alpine highlands, Norway and Spitsbergen, and Italy. Although at that time it was still rare to deal with oriental motifs, Macco's numerous works in particular, which had been created during his trips to the Orient to Athens , Constantinople , Baalbek , Jerusalem , Cairo and Mecca , soon became among the most sought-after of his art objects.

Georg Macco is exhibited with several works in the municipal art museum in Düsseldorf , in the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen, in the Rudolfinum in Prague and since 1888 in the Alpine Museum in Munich . Some of his works in Aachen are on the list of the "shadow gallery", i.e. the paintings that were abducted as looted art during the war , and it is now hoped that some of these pictures will be found again in the holdings of the Simferopol Art Museum when they were recently rediscovered .

Macco created his paintings in particular using the gouache technique as well as with oil paint and, more rarely, with water color . The works are particularly impressive because of their expressionistic style and their masterly representation of color and light effects as well as their pronounced sense of details and moods.
