Cape Girardeau (French: Cap-Girardeau ) is the largest city (with the status " City ") in Cape Girardeau County in the southeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Missouri . A small portion of the southern neighborhood extends into Scott County . In 2010 the city had 37,941 inhabitants.

Cape Girardeau is on the west bank of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois . The city is located at 37 ° 18'33 "north latitude and 93 ° 32'47" west longitude and extends over 63 km 2 .
On the southern outskirts of Cape Girardeau, the Headwater Diversion Channel flows east , an artificially created flood channel, which in addition to the Castor River takes up a number of other rivers and flows into the Mississippi.

On the western outskirts of the city, Interstate 55 runs parallel to the Mississippi and is the shortest connection from St. Louis to Memphis . US Highway 61 runs parallel through the city center . Missouri State Routes 34 , 74 and 177 also meet in Cape Girardeau .
A BNSF Railway runs through Cape Girardeau Township and runs along the entire length of the Mississippi.
Cape Girardeau Regional Airport is located on the southern outskirts of Cape Girardeau in Scott County .
