The Wolfsschlucht north of Wallersberg is a Rhaetian sandstone gorge northeast of Wallersberg , a district of the Middle Franconian municipality of Schwarzenbruck in Bavaria .

description

The roughly 250-meter-long and wildly romantic gorge is surrounded by heavily weathered sandstone rock formations . The gorge is sometimes very narrow and cut deep into the rock. A small, nameless brook that flows through the gorge flows into the Schwarzach near Burgthann . This stream rises above the gorge and is fed by other smaller springs in the area of the gorge. A small 3 meter high waterfall has also been created here, but it only carries water at times.

The Wolfsschlucht also forms the boundary between the communities of Schwarzenbruck and the city of Altdorf near Nuremberg .

geology

Over the millennia, the brook has dug itself deep into the layers of the Rhaetian Lias sandstone and the Upper Feuerletten, producing natural rock outcrops. About 200 million years ago, in the transition period between Triassic (Upper Keuper = Rhät) and Jura (Lias), there was a shallow inland sea in Central Franconia in the northwest and the mainland in the southeast. Fine-grained and sandy sediments were deposited in this sea , which later solidified into clay and sandstone. Since it is not possible to clearly distinguish which of the rocks are to be assigned to the Rhaetian and which to the Lias, these are called the Rhaet-Lias transition layers. There are frequent rockfalls in the gorge .

Protected area

The area is part of the Natura 2000 network and designated as part of the protected area DE6633371, NSG 'Schwarzach-Durchbruch' and Rhätschluchten bei Burgthann .

The gorge is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 574R004 and as a natural monument (ND-Nr. ND-04666). It is also part of the Schwarzachtal landscape protection area with side valleys (LSG-00587.01).

Access

The gorge is freely accessible all year round. A narrow, natural path leads through the gorge, which requires surefootedness. The path branches off south of the Franconian Dune Trail . In the immediate vicinity is the beautiful Sophienquelle .
