Nikolaus Selnecker

Nikolaus Selnecker (also: Sellenecker , Nicolaus Selneccer ; * December 6, 1530 in Hersbruck ; † May 24, 1592 in Leipzig ) was a German Protestant theologian , reformer , hymn poet and composer .

Life

Nikolaus Selnecker, son of the town clerk and notary Georg Schellenecker and Dorothea (née Peer), grew up in Nuremberg from 1534 . Since his early youth he dedicated himself to music and in 1542 became organist at the Nuremberg Castle Chapel. On April 29, 1550 he began studying at the University of Wittenberg . His father's friendship with Philipp Melanchthon opened the house of the Preceptor to him . Under his influence he obtained on July 31, 1554 the academic degree of a master's degree in the fine arts. He was accepted as a member of the philosophical faculty on May 1, 1555 and was its dean in the summer of 1556 .

He never doubted Melanchthon's agreement with Martin Luther . Melanchthon recommended him in 1557 as the third court preacher to Dresden . Thereupon he was appointed there by Elector August and received ordination on February 1, 1558 in Wittenberg . On April 4, 1559, he also took over the management of the court orchestra and on February 14, 1560, he also became the tutor of Prince Elector Alexander . In 1558 he married the daughter of the superintendent Daniel Greser , under whose influence he came. After he had reprimanded the elector's passion for hunting in August 1564, he could only get an honorable farewell by giving up his office.

In March 1565, Selnecker went to Jena as a theology professor , but had to give way to the Gnesiolutherans after only two years . In 1568, Elector August appointed him professor of theology at the University of Leipzig . In Wittenberg he obtained his doctorate on May 10, 1570 . He then took over the office of general superintendent in Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , but had a difficult time there with Martin Chemnitz and Jacob Andreae .

During this unfortunate time for him, he soon stayed in Gandersheim , and in 1572 in Oldenburg , where he played a key role in founding the High School, the forerunner of the University of Helmstedt . In 1573 he drafted the Oldenburg Church Ordinance with Hermann Hamelmann . At the turn of the year 1573/74 he returned to his professorship in Leipzig and in 1576 was also pastor at St. Thomas Church and superintendent , as well as canon at Meissen Cathedral . In the meantime he was a sharp opponent of the Philippists and took part in the negotiations on the concord formula .

After the death of Elector August, he was deposed and expelled under the Calvinist Elector Christian I of Saxony in 1589. He lived in Magdeburg until he became superintendent in Hildesheim in October 1590 . When there was another change of government in Saxony in 1591 and there was a change in church conditions, he returned to Leipzig. Soon afterwards he died and was lavishly buried in the Thomaskirche, where his grave slab can still be found today.

Selnecker bequeathed 170 writings, including the Historia Lutheri (1575) and the History of the Augsburg Confession (1584), and was involved in the preparation of the Book of Concord . He had also composed 120 songs, some of which are still in the Evangelical Hymnal (EG) and in the Evangelical Lutheran Church Hymn .
