Jakob Lindner (* 1544 in Mittweida ; † April 2, 1606 in Naumburg (Saale) ) was a German educator.

Life

Born as the son of the Mittweida citizen and baker Hans Lindner and his wife Magaretha, daughter of the Chemnitz citizen Nicolai Jahn, he proved to be talented at an early age. After finishing school in Mittweida, he went to school in Freiberg in 1559 and was accepted into the Grimma state school in 1562 . Here he obtained his university entrance qualification as an alumnus in 1566 and moved to the University of Wittenberg in 1567 .

After Lindner had acquired the academic degree of a Magister in Wittenberg in 1570, he was appointed as the third teacher at the Pforta State School the following year . Here he possibly received the post of vice-principal as early as 1575 and on April 23, 1580 he became rector of the institution. Also in 1580 Lindner married Maria Magdalena, the daughter of the famous reformer Nikolaus Selnecker .

Under the elector Christian I of Saxony , the Philippists gained a dominant position and expelled the Gnesiolutherans from their offices. Lindner, like his father-in-law, had to leave their offices as Lutherans in 1588. Then Lindner went to Naumburg, where he owned his own house and lived as a citizen for three years. He then served as a city councilor and finally elected mayor of the city.

After the elector's death and Christian II of Saxony took office, the tide turned in favor of the Gnesiolutherans. His father-in-law received his professorship back in Leipzig and Lindner was able to return to the Pforta State School as Rector after the sudden death of Rector Bartholomäus Walther in 1592. For reasons of age he asked for his retirement in 1601, which was granted to him with a pension of 100 guilders. He spent the last years of his life in Naumburg, where he died of old age and was buried on April 3rd with a great funeral procession.
