Daniel Greser

Daniel Greser, also: Greiser, Gresser (* December 6, 1504 in Weilburg ; † September 29, 1591 in Dresden ), was a Lutheran theologian .

Life

Daniel was the son of the cobbler Conrad Greser († 1532 in Weilburg (Pest)) and his wife Aula was born. After attending school in Weilburg, at the age of about 15, he was ordained as a priest in Trier, received his first tonsure and became ostiarius. Then he attended the particular school in Butzbach, spent two years in Kassel , one year in Gotha , then at the school of our dear women in Erfurt . In Erfurt he experienced how Martin Luther preached on his way to the Reichstag in Worms. When he returned to Weilburg, he received a canonical. However, he did not keep this for long because his predecessor had wrongly acquired it. Instead, his uncle found him a vicariate at the Weilburger Stiftand soon afterwards he moved to Koblenz in the same capacity . But since he was too young to become a priest, he moved to the University of Mainz , where he studied until 1526. In 1526 he was ordained a priest in Mainz and subsequently held a priesthood in Edelsberg.

He was convinced of the work of the Reformation by Erhard Schnepf , who worked in his native Weilburg . Together with Schnepf, he moved to Marburg , where he met Johannes Brenz and was won over to the consistently Lutheran view. In 1531 he was appointed pastor in Gießen and worked there until Duke Moritz von Sachsen called him to Dresden in 1542 . In relation to the numerous crypto-calvinists , he held on to his strict position there, which was not without hardship. In 1567 he wrote a postil, in 1570 he published 51 penitential sermons showing a remarkable style, and finally a biography.
