Gustav Kawerau

Gustav Kawerau (born February 25, 1847 in Bunzlau , Lower Silesia , † December 1, 1918 in Berlin ) was a German theologian . He was a high school teacher in Magdeburg and a university teacher in Kiel and Breslau .

Life

Kawerau's parents were Martin Kawerau , grammar school teacher and organist at the St. Matthew Church (Berlin-Tiergarten) , and his wife Luise Henriette nee. Bald . He attended the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium (Berlin) and from 1863 studied Protestant theology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . In 1866 he was assistant preacher for the Evangelical Church in Prussia at the St. Lukas Church (Berlin) . In 1871 he came to Langheinersdorf in the district of Züllichau-Schwiebus as a pastor . There he made a name for himself with some publications. In 1882 he became a grammar school professor for theology and spiritual inspector of the monastery school Our Dear Women in Magdeburg .

In 1886 he took over the full professorship for practical theology at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . In 1894 he moved to the chair of the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University in Breslau . He was a consistorial councilor and university preacher. For the academic year 1904/05 he was elected rector of the University of Wroclaw. In his rector's speech on October 15, 1904, he dealt with the origin of Christmas .

1907 Kawerau became provost of the Petrikirche (Berlin-Cölln) in Berlin. At the same time he was an honorary member of the Prussian Evangelical Upper Church Council and honorary professor at the university.

Scientifically, he mainly devoted himself to the history of the Reformation and church music . He wrote several articles for the Real Encyclopedia for Protestant Theology and Church . From 1901 to 1918 he was chairman of the Association for the History of the Reformation . After Julius Köstlin 's death , from 1903 onwards, he was in charge of his long-time standard work, Luther's biography from the fifth edition. From 1905 he headed the commission for the publication of the Weimar Luther Edition , having previously been responsible for individual volumes. After the death of Ernst Ludwig Enders in 1906, he continued his edition of Luther's letters.

From 1913 he participated in the publication of the yearbook for Brandenburg church history .
