Ensemble old town Hersbruck
The ensemble Hersbruck ( Lage ) encompasses the historical old town, which is delimited by its late medieval fortifications with remains of the city wall, city gates, Zwinger and moat, including the Scheunenviertel in the northeast and the Pegnitz Island in the south. Hersbruck was first mentioned in 1003 as a settlement that stretched from the north bank of the Pegnitz on gently sloping terrain to close to the Michaelsberg. It developed at a former river crossing, where at that time it was already functioning as a bridge for the Regensburg-Forchheim trade route, which led into the town via the former Mühltor and ran in a south-north direction. In 1011 Heinrich II gave this important place to the diocese of Bamberg , in which the Counts of Sulzbach, as bailiffs, took over all rights. After its extinction (1188), Hersbruck became Staufer until it fell to the Bavarian Wittelsbachers in 1269 . In 1504 it fell together with most of the Pegnitz area to the imperial city of Nuremberg until it became Bavarian with the entire Nuremberg territory in 1806. Probably the oldest settlement center stretched around the former "Alte Veste" with tower on the Pegnitz, which after 1504 had to give way to the construction of a nursing home in Nuremberg, and the church on both sides of the trade route, donated by the Bavarian dowager Wiltrud at the end of the 10th century Regensburg – Forchheim. Today's Kirchgasse with Schlossplatz, formerly the so-called lower town, was then combined as a church district. In 1057 Heinrich IV granted the town of Hersbruck market, coinage and customs rights. So it must have been a market settlement. This second historical core developed as the so-called Bamberg market, probably around Martin-Luther-Straße (formerly Wassergasse) as a market square. Its delimitation is determined by the extent of the old water district, which is why the plaza-like zone in front of the water gate with the houses on Vorderen Schulgasse belongs to the old town area. Probably during the Staufer period, next to these older settlement cores, a street square corresponding to the Bavarian-Palatinate scheme with the town hall placed in the street space and later rebuilt several times was laid out. This great street market is located north of the lower city (Kirchgasse) and opens to the east to the two older market streets, Martin-Luther-Straße and Prager Straße. The latter gained special importance in the 14th century under Emperor Charles IV in connection with the connection road from Nuremberg to Bohemia or Prague, which the name also refers to. The hospital founded on this street in 1406 originally (as recently as 1425) was located outside the city, which corresponds to the medieval rule, but it was already included in the city fortifications in the middle of the 15th century. The peculiar, still preserved town plan, in which the four streets Eisenhüttlein, Prager Strasse, Martin-Luther-Strasse and Kirchgasse extend like a finger from the Upper Market / Lower Market, results from the routing of the trunk roads that was laid in the course of the Middle Ages. The number and size of the market areas in the city prove the important position of Hersbruck as a trading center, which was based primarily on the hops and salt trade (monopoly since 1579). With the granting of city rights between 1359 and 1364, the expansion of the city fortifications took place, which has been mentioned in a document since 1313, but still consisted of a moat and palisade wall. It was completed in 1444 and had hardly changed in the centuries that followed. The city wall, which is still partially preserved today, which includes the castle and the church in the south, is secured with three gates - the Nuremberg Gate in the west, the Spitaltor in the north and the water gate in the east - as well as a former kennel and a moat. Presumably the “inner” arm of the Pegnitz was created artificially in order to additionally secure the city fortifications from the north-east corner of the hospital to the south-west corner of the church district. In this context, the oldest mill in Hersbruck, the so-called Schlossmühle or Niedermühle, was probably moved behind the castle. The Pegnitzinsel is therefore functionally part of the old town. As in many smaller medieval towns, the citizens of Hersbruck were so-called arable citizens who operated a trade or were traders, but also farmed and raised cattle as a purchase. Barns and stables in the old town houses and numerous barns inside and outside the wall are a visible expression of this. In the area of the Spitalvorstadt there is accordingly a quarter mainly characterized by barns, the Scheunenviertel. It shows an impressive historical suburban situation that had developed in the course of the 16th century, as there was no space for new buildings within the city wall. Since Hersbruck was spared major fire disasters in past centuries, some of the houses in the city still go back to the Middle Ages, but have undergone structural changes in later centuries. During the Second World War the city was spared air raids, but in connection with the withdrawal of German troops in April 1945, the town hall and 33 apartments were destroyed by fire. The historical development in the core city is still relatively dense, in the expansion area already broken up by renovations and new buildings, especially in the west and northeast. The townscape is characterized by two to three-story gabled houses from the 15th to 18th centuries with half-timbered structures, often plastered. In addition, the type of the eaves- standing house with a dwarf house and occasionally with crested wood and sandstone houses from the late 18th and 19th centuries appears. The main public monumental buildings are the Evangelical Lutheran parish church, formerly Sankt Maria (13th / 14th century), the St. Elisabeth hospital church (15th century) and the citizen's hospital (14th / 15th century) as well as the former nursing home (16th century) Century) and the town hall (core 13th century), which was rebuilt after 1945. Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
