Ensemble Altstadt Altdorf near Nuremberg

In the old town of Altdorf

The old town of Altdorf near Nuremberg ( location ), a planned market establishment, like the neighboring towns of Upper Palatinate , is an approximately oval complex that has a broad street market in an approximately east-west direction. The stages of spatial development of the place, which is mentioned for the first time in 1129, in the 14th / 15th centuries. Century as a market or town, begin with the former royal court, whose location north of today's town church is known as Königsbühl and Kappelgraben. The market settlement, designated “between the zwayn thorn” when the market was granted in 1368 , extended from today's lower gate only to the church and town hall and was bordered to the north by the Badgraben along today's Kiliansgasse. The Amtshof (castle) was then still in front of this older market settlement. With the construction of the moat and wall, which began in 1387 and lasted until the middle of the 15th century, the city received the scope that was also valid for the ensemble. The two ponds protecting the Upper Gate in the west, the Wash Pond and the Roß Pond, are also included as preserved parts of the former fortifications.

This new installation of the fortifications already took place under the rule of the Upper Palatinate Wittelsbachers , who, beginning with Count Palatine Rupprecht , commanded the Altdorf area from 1394, which was not included in the Nuremberg countryside until 1504 . As a result, Altdorf was shaped in the economic as well as in the intellectual upswing by its position as the center of an imperial city care office .

The epoch of the second half of the 16th century, which was so important for the city, begins with the extensive reconstruction of the city after Altdorf was cremated by Albrecht Alcibiades in the Second Margrave War in 1552/53 , consistently following the building lines of the medieval city plan.

The decisive turning point in the city's history was the relocation of the Nuremberg Melanchthon-Gymnasium in 1575 to Altdorf, from 1623 university , which was not closed until 1809. With the construction of the school and university building, the first phase of construction began in 1571, a new monumental building was added in the southern half of the city, next to the Nuremberg Nursing Castle to the west (rebuilt in 1585).

The subsequent new buildings and changes, such as the new building of the parish church from 1753/55 and the historicizing reconstruction of the north side of the Untere Markt after a last major city fire in 1871, and the removal of the city wall from 1818, have the decisive characteristics of the town and the ensemble Altdorf not changed: The university town of the 16./17. Century with the planned urban structure, which had received its valid version around 1400. File number: E-5-74-112-1.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
