Antuan Ilgit

Antuan Ilgit (* 1972 in Hersbruck , Bavaria ) is an Italian Jesuit priest and economist of Turkish origin. Because of his conversion from Sunni Islam to Roman Catholic Christianity , he received massive pressure from the Turkish emigrant community in Germany , including physical violence and death threats .

Antuan Ilgit graduated in economics and management at the Gazi University in the Turkish capital Ankara . As a doctor of economics , he converted to Roman Catholic Christianity. Ilgit was baptized on March 29, 1997 in the Chapel of St. Teresa of the Child of Jesus in Ankara. After a two-year novitiate in Genoa , he took his first vows and became the first Jesuit with Turkish citizenship. In 2010 he was ordained a priest by Cardinal Giovanni Layolo in the Church of Gesù in Rome. Since 2013 he has dual citizenship, Turkish and Italian.

After completing his bachelor's degree in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome as one of the best, he studied for a year at the Pontifical Oriental Institute , where he received a license in moral theology and bioethics at the Pontifical Alfonsian Academy . His doctoral thesis “A Comparison between Issues Related to the Beginning of Life in Turkish Bioethics and the Teaching of the Catholic Church” dealt with the topics of abortion , contraception , in vitro fertilization and the use of embryonic stem cells based on Turkish laws , the biomedical Regulate research, the statements of the Turkish Medical Association , as well as the decisions and studies of the Presidium for Religious Affairs (Diyanet) of the Republic of Turkey. He also received a Masters in Health Ethics from Saint Joseph University in Philadelphia . In 2012 he was nominated for membership in Alpha Sigma Nu , the international academic honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities. After graduating with distinction, he was proposed for the national honor society Alpha Epsilon Lambda of the Omega branch at St. Josefs University.

He received his renewed doctorate in moral theology from the Department of Theology and Ministries of Boston College ( Chestnut Hill ) with a dissertation on “Muslim and Catholic Perspectives on Disability in the Contemporary Context of Turkey: A Proposal for Muslim-Christian Dialogue” under the Directed by Rev. James T. Bretzke, SJ, STD

Ilgit participates in compliance with bioethical principles and is involved in Christian-Islamic dialogue . He hopes that Muslims and Christians will meet each other on this matter and work together for values. He is currently professor in charge of moral theology at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy in Naples . A revised version of his doctoral thesis was published by Libra Books in Istanbul in 2017 .
