Kremlin Cup (Russian billiards)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kremlin Cup ( Russian Кубок Кремля Kubok Kremlja ) is an annual billiards tournament in the Olimpijski in the Russian capital Moscow . Record winners are the Ukrainian Jaroslaw Tarnovezkyj and the Russian Wladislaw Osminin , each with two titles. In the women's category, the Russian Diana Mironova was most successful with six tournament wins so far.

In addition to the world championships, the Kremlin Cup is one of the most important tournaments in Russian billiards . The disciplines free pyramid (women) and combined pyramid (men) are played. Until 2009, the men's competition was also played in the Free Pyramid.

Since 2011, a pool tournament of the same name has been held in parallel .

history

The tournament was first held in May 2005 in Moscow's Olimpijski , where the World Cup had taken place five months earlier . The reigning world champion Qanybek Saghyndyqow won the first edition with 16 participants . After a one-year break, the Kremlin Cup has been held annually since 2007, mostly in October. In 2008 the tournament was opened to all players and over 100 participants took part. In the following years the field of participants increased further, in 2011 more than 200 players took part for the first time, in 2013 even 318. Then the number of participants decreased again, most recently it was around 190 (2019). In 2020 the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

After the first four events in the free pyramid discipline , the company switched to the combined pyramid in 2009 . The women's competition, which has been held since 2008, continues to be played in the Free Pyramid.

At the sixth edition in 2011, the Ukrainian Yaroslav Tarnovetskyj was the first player to secure his second victory. Three years later, the Russian Wladislaw Osminin was the first player to defend his title. Both are record winners with two titles to this day.

The women's competition was also initially balanced. The first four tournaments were won by four different players. In the following years, record world champion Diana Mironova dominated the Kremlin Cup. She won five of the six tournaments between 2012 and 2017. In 2019, Belarusian Kazjaryna Perepetschajewa won the first time a non-Russian player.

Prize money

The prize money was increased significantly from 2011 to 2015 and roughly doubled for the tournament winners. The 2011 winner received 280,000 Russian rubles (winner: 140,000 rubles), in 2015 it was 520,000 rubles (winner: 300,000 rubles). In the following years, however, the total prize money of the two pyramid competitions was reduced by 700,000 rubles, while the prize money of the parallel pool tournament was increased by the same amount.
